Job summary

MedStar Harbor Hospital is seeking a PRN Pharmacy Technician II for its inpatient pharmacy. Under pharmacist supervision, you will prepare and fill routine orders, restock automated dispensing machines, repackages medications, and handle sterile and non-sterile compounding.

You will assist in obtaining patient information, ensure safe medication management, and follow hospital policies for recalls and inventory. Prior hospital experience and Maryland tech license are preferred.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Completion of an approved/accredited Pharmacy Technician training program preferred.
• 6 to 12 months related pharmacy technician experience preferred.
• Hospital environment experience preferred.
• Registered Pharmacy Technician through the Maryland Board of Pharmacy required upon hire.
• National Pharmacy Technician license such as the PTCB or ExCPT required upon hire.

Responsibilities

• Assists pharmacists in obtaining patient specific information for safe medication management.
• Refills and replaces medications in automated dispensing machines; troubleshoots and services them.
• Safely and accurately prepares all medications including hazardous medications and sterile products.
• Selects and procures medications based on formulary criteria and handles non-formulary procurement.
• Adheres to hospital policies on recalls, expired, or returned medications and performs inspections of storage areas.

General Summary of Position

The Inpatient pharmacy at MedStar Harbor Hospital is hiring a PRN Pharmacy Technician II.

Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician prepares and fills routine orders for prescribed medications; restocks automated dispensing machines; repackages medications; compounds both sterile and non-sterile medications.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Assists pharmacists in obtaining patient specific information as appropriate for safe medication management. Under direct supervision participates in the exchange of information with appropriate healthcare professionals and staff.
• Refills and replaces medications in automated medication dispensing machines throughout the hospital. Troubleshoots and services automated medication dispensing machines as needed. Appropriately labels all medications and chemicals used to prepare medications with contents expiration dates and appropriated warnings. Routinely inspects all medication storage areas according to hospital's policy. Adheres to all laws regulations and hospital policies regarding the management and handling of recalled discontinued unused expired or returned medications. Inspects returned medications for integrity before returning to pharmacy stock. Segregates outdated or recalled medications from pharmacy stock.
• Participates in the evaluation of the hospital's medication management system for risk points and identifies areas to improve safety.
• Safely and accurately prepares all medications in the most ready to administer form (including hazardous medications and sterile products) using proper techniques, calculations and appropriate precautions.
• Selection and Procurement: Ensures that medications are selected and procured based on departmental criteria. Demonstrates a working knowledge of the formulary list and the formulary process. Adheres to policies and procedures regarding the procurement of non-formulary medications. Adheres to policies and procedures that address medication shortages outages emergency and disaster situations. If applicable adheres to policies and procedures regarding the 340B Drug Pricing Program.

Minimal Qualifications

Education

• High School Diploma or GED required
• Completion of an approved/accredited Pharmacy Technician training program preferred

Experience

• 6 to 12 months related pharmacy technician experience preferred
• Hospital environment experience preferred

Licenses and Certifications

• Registered Pharmacy Technician through the Maryland Board of Pharmacy required upon hire
• National Pharmacy Technician license such as the PTCB or ExCPT required upon hire

This position has a hiring range of

USD $19.55 - USD $34.25 /Hr.
