Pharm Tech Specialist - Oncology Sterile Compound

Join to apply for the Pharm Tech Specialist - Oncology Sterile Compound role at Brown University Health.

Reports to the Pharmacy Manager Oncology and Sterile Compounding. Under the supervision of an Oncology Pharmacist and the direction of a Pharmacy Technician Supervisor or Group Leader, the Technician Specialist performs sterile compounding of medications, primarily oncology, in compliance with USP Chapter Hazardous Drugs, USP Chapter Pharmaceutical Compounding - Sterile Preparations, and NIOSH recommendations. Also performs non-sterile compounding following applicable standards. Ensures regulatory compliance with state and federal guidelines, including Rhode Island Department of Health, Rhode Island Board of Pharmacy, and TJC standards. Executes complex pharmacy technical functions to support operations related to oncology and infusion medication preparation and dispensing. Promotes patient safety by segregating hazardous medications and collaborates with pharmacy teams for inventory management, ordering, and storage.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain aseptic conditions in the sterile compounding environment and equipment.
  • Follow proper hand hygiene and garbing procedures.
  • Perform sterile and non-sterile compounding per USP, NIOSH, and institutional policies.
  • Document compounded medications accurately.
  • Prepare investigational medications as per protocols.
  • Utilize computer systems for compounding documentation and processes.
  • Operate ancillary equipment such as pumps.
  • Ensure proper storage and delivery of compounded medications.
  • Coordinate with pharmacy teams for procurement and inventory management.
  • Monitor environmental controls like temperature and humidity during storage.
  • Transfer medications to satellite locations as needed.
  • Maintain records and participate in training of staff and interns.
  • Address issues impacting pharmacy oncology services proactively.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; college coursework preferred.
  • Current Rhode Island Pharmacy Technician II license and CPhT certification.
  • At least 3 years of pharmacy technician experience, including 2 years in investigational oncology or sterile compounding.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy systems, automated technology, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and adapt priorities.
  • Obtain and maintain IV and oncology credentialing within 2 months of hire, with semi-annual competency assessments.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Extended standing and walking; manual dexterity for computer and equipment operation; occasional travel between sites.

Additional Details
