Job description

Responsible for moving trailers to and from unload/load doors and throughout the yard. May also handle the physical loading, unloading, and sorting of packages by hand, including lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, and placing packages safely and efficiently.

Essential Functions

1. Perform trailer switches, including hooking and moving parked trailers from the yard to a load/unload door, or vice versa.
2. Communicate with management or central control to coordinate trailer movements.
3. Document trailer moves using the Yard Management System or switcher cards.
4. Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections on switcher equipment.
5. Follow yard switching safety procedures.

Additional responsibilities may include package handling, such as:

1. Using hand-to-surface methods for all package handling.
2. Loading and unloading packages onto/from delivery vehicles, trailers, conveyor carts, and load gratings.
3. Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling packages continuously for shifts of two to four hours.
4. Sorting packages by scanning, reading labels, and verifying information.
5. Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education

None required

Minimum Experience

No experience required; six months of package handling or switching/CDL experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Valid driver’s license and DOT file.
• Ability to understand work instructions and safety procedures.
• Ability to discern numbers and information for package sorting.
• Ability to operate basic tools and equipment such as skate wheel rollers, dock carts, scanners, and unloading devices.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills in a fast-paced environment.

Job Conditions

• Work may occur in hot/cold temperatures, environments with fumes, or loud noise.
