Job summary

Federal Express Corporation in Birmingham, AL seeks a Yard Switcher/Package Handler to move trailers and assist with loading, unloading, and sorting packages. You will operate in the yard, hook and move trailers between yards and doors, and coordinate with central control.

CDL Class A and a valid license are preferred for interstate work. The role requires safety-conscious individuals who can read instructions, work in a fast-paced environment, and communicate effectively with teammates.

Qualifications

• Valid driver's license and DOT file are required.
• CDL Class A license to operate in interstate commerce.

• Ability to discern numbers for correct package sorting.
• Experience or ability to use yard equipment (rollers, carts, scanners).
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

• Move trailers between yard and doors and switchers.
• Coordinate trailer movements with management/central control.
• Document trailer moves using Yard Management System or switcher cards.
• Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections of switcher equipment.
• Follow yard switching safety procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

Responsible for the movement of trailers to and from the unload / load doors and throughout the yard. May also be responsible for the physical loading, unloading and/or sorting of packages by hand, including lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying and placing, in a safe and efficient manner.

Essential Functions

• Performs trailer switches defined as hooking and moving a parked trailer from the yard to a load/unload door or hooking and moving a trailer from a door to the yard.
• Communicates with management and/or central control to coordinate trailer movements in the yard.
• Documents trailer moves using the Yard Management System (where available) or switcher cards.
• Performs pre- and post-trip inspections on switcher equipment.
• Understands and demonstrates effective yard switching safety processes and procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education
None required

Minimum Experience
No experience required; six (6) months of experience as a package handler or switching/CDL operator experience preferred.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Must have a valid driver's license and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) file.
• Commercial Driver's License (CDL - Class A) to operate in interstate commerce is required
• Ability to understand and follow instruction regarding work duties and safety methods.
• Ability to discern numbers and information in order to sort packages correctl
• Ability to use basic tools and equipment such as skate wheel rollers, dock carts, hand-held scanners, chutes and unloading devices
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment.

If this opportunity includes multiple job levels, the salary information represents the job level minimum and the job level maximum. Actual starting pay would be determined by experience relative to the job, market level, pay at the location for this job and other job-related factors permitted by law. An employee may be eligible for additional pay, premiums, or bonus potential. The Company offers eligible employees health, vision and dental insurance, retirement, and tuition reimbursement.

Pay: $23.90-$26.90

Additional Details: MID/SUN sorts, 900 PM - 700 AM, days available TBD
