Job summary

The Georgia Department of Public Health seeks an Environmental Health Specialist in Jasper, GA to support the mission of protecting lives and promoting healthy lifestyles across communities. You will evaluate facilities for regulatory compliance, respond to health emergencies, and handle inspections across multiple program areas.

Requires degrees with laboratory science coursework and relevant experience; preferred candidates have additional certifications and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

  • EHS1 requires a Bachelor's with 27 sem hrs in lab sciences (biology, environmental science, chemistry, geology, physics).
  • EHS2 requires a Bachelor's with 27 sem hrs or 40 quarter hours in laboratory sciences plus one year of relevant experience.
  • Note: Any agency-specified certification/training may count toward experience.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate facilities and properties for compliance with Georgia Environmental Health Regulations.
  • Work in On-Site Sewage Management Systems, Animal Bite Investigations, Food Service Establishments, Public Swimming Pools, Tourist Accommodations, Body Art Studios.
  • Respond to public health emergencies as requested; participate in emergency functions.
  • Responds to Environmental Health complaints.
  • Drive a personal or company vehicle for work daily.
  • Position has physical demands and may include year-round indoor/outdoor work; lifting 25–40 lbs occasionally.

As a PH Environmental Health Specialist within the Georgia Department of Public Health, you will join a dedicated group of public health professionals that help support the overall mission and vision of protecting lives of Georgian residents in a variety of ways.



Location: Pickens County Environmental Health Dept.- Jasper, GA



Job Responsibilities


  • Under supervision, candidate evaluates facilities and properties for compliance with Georgia Environmental Health Regulations and performs work in the following program areas: On-Site Sewage Management Systems, Animal Bite Investigations, Food Service Establishments, Public Swimming Pools, Tourist Accommodations, Body Art Studios.

  • Respond to public health emergencies as requested. All county public health employees are deemed essential in the event of an emergency and are required to participate in emergency functions.

  • Responds to Environmental Health complaints.

  • Must be able to drive a personal vehicle and/or company vehicle for work daily for assigned work.

  • Position has physical demands—frequent standing, bending, squatting, walking, etc in various settings required. Includes year-round work both indoor and in outdoor climates. Occasional lifting of 25-40 lbs may be required.

  • Position requires proficiency in data entry of assigned work on department issued equipment.

  • Some overnight travel for training purposes may be required.

  • This is a salary position and based on a 40-hour work week, M-F 8am to 5pm



Minimum Qualifications

EHS 1: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university which included the completion of 27 semester hours in laboratory sciences (i.e. biology, environmental science, chemistry, geology, physics)


EHS 2: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, which includes the completion of 27 semester hours or 40 quarter hours in laboratory sciences (e.g., chemistry, biology, geology, physics, etc.) and one (1) year of experience at the lower level PH Envir Compl Specialist 1 (RCP120) or equivalent position.


Note: Any agency-specified certification/training that may be experience.



Preferred Qualifications


  • Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Chemistry, or Environmental Science

  • Completion of Georgia DPH New EHS Training course(s)

  • CFSM Certificate

  • Communication or leadership coursework/program

  • Prior experience in customer service role

CBH accepts educational credential recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and/or the US Department of Education (DOE) will be considered.
