Job summary

Duke Energy Corporation in Charlotte, NC, seeks a SCADA Engineer I or II to design, program, and support Station Data Managers (SDMs), SCADA devices, and HMIs across transmission and distribution substations.

The selected level will be determined by education, experience, and demonstrated technical proficiency, with a hybrid on-site work arrangement in place for this role. Strong preference for those with SCADA protocol knowledge and engineering fundamentals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program; Master’s degree considered in lieu of BS.
  • Engineer II requires minimum 2 years of engineering experience at a “Fully Meets” level.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Support multiple SCADA hardware platforms and develop SCADA configuration files for Transmission, Distribution, Customer, and Generation Interconnection stations.

SCADA engineers perform design, programming, and support of Station Data Managers (SDMs), SCADA devices, and related Human Machine Interfaces (HMI). These systems provide real-time data and local or remote operating capability to support Operations, Construction, Field Resources, and Control Center personnel across Transmission and Distribution substations.

This posting may be filled at either the Engineer I or Engineer II level. The selected level will be determined based on the candidate’s education, experience, demonstrated technical proficiency, ability to work with appropriate independence, and alignment to business need.

SCADA Engineering Scope
  • Design, develop, and implement programs and configuration files for SCADA devices supporting substation metering, alarming, controls, and troubleshooting.
  • Support multiple SCADA hardware platforms and communications protocols, including DNP 3.0, SEL, ASCII, and MODBUS.
  • Read and interpret protection one-lines, wiring diagrams, schematics, panel drawings, relay settings, customer data, and other project documentation.
  • Create IO summaries based on drawings, relay settings, and customer data.
  • Interface with P&C Engineering, Design, Field Resources, System Operations, and Operations/Control Center personnel.
  • Provide commissioning, engineering, and troubleshooting support to field resources when required.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates must meet the qualifications for the level at which they are selected.

Engineer I
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
  • No experience required.
  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
Engineer II
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
  • Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience. Experience must have been attained at a "Fully Meets" performance level.
  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
Additional Preferred / Desired Qualifications
  • Engineering Degree in Electrical or Computer Disciplines
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department. (Engineer II preferred)
  • Basic understanding of communication protocols including DNP 3.0, SEL, ASCII, and MODBUS.
  • Basic understanding of networking and telecommunications.
  • Ability to read protection one-lines, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
  • Familiarity with SCADA hardware platforms, HMI software, automation/computing platforms, and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with SEL products and applicable regulatory requirements, including NERC CIP.
Working Conditions
  • Mobility Classification: Hybrid (Minimum of 3 days in office).
  • Full-time position.
  • Ability to participate in scheduled after-hours support rotation for emergent issues and storm response, as required.
  • Located in Charlotte, NC - Plaza Building, 34th Floor.
