Petroleum Construction Laborer - Saginaw

The company operates in three distinct areas of construction: petroleum contracting and service, general contracting, and electrical. R.W. Mercer provides a turn-key approach that includes planning, design, construction, installation, and ongoing service, monitoring, and maintenance.

A Petroleum Construction Laborer at R.W. Mercer assists in the general installation of pipe, concrete, and other site tasks. The Laborer supports and assists other Excavation and Heavy Equipment Operators.

REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Report to the shop at the start of each shift for daily assignments. Perform routine duties with minimal supervision; work is reviewed at completion.
• Perform strenuous manual labor tasks.
• Prepare surfaces manually.
• Excavate and fill trenches.
• Maintain a clean job site; secure tools and equipment daily to prevent hazards.
• Clean up job sites and fill scrap dumpsters using carts, wheelbarrows, and barrels.
• Handle and store materials properly.
• Follow safety and incident reporting procedures; report issues to the foreman, safety director, or HR manager.
• Prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities.
• Perform trenching, pipe and conduit laying, and installation of water/fuel piping.
• Conduct onsite and shop cleaning, including power washing, sweeping, and organizing materials.
• Perform weekly inventory of stored materials and report to the supervisor.
• Assist Carpenters, Pipefitters, Foremen, and Superintendents as a working apprentice.
• Erect scaffolding and ladders for above-ground structures.
• Assist with loading/unloading trucks, checking delivery tickets, and reporting discrepancies.
• Support minor callbacks and other duties as assigned.
• Maintain equipment cleanliness and perform basic maintenance.
• This position reports to our Saginaw Branch.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is primarily outdoors, with exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, odors, gases, and weather conditions. The role involves working on various surfaces, including slippery and uneven terrain, and may require extended hours, including evenings and weekends.

Physical

The role requires sufficient physical ability to walk, stand, sit, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, twist, push, pull, and carry moderate to heavy weights. Operating equipment and working in trenches, confined spaces, heights, and extreme weather are also involved.
