Job summary

UC Santa Barbara is seeking a Pest Management Technician to provide safe, IPM‑based pest control across campus facilities including student housing, libraries, research facilities, and museums. You will work with clients to advise on sanitation, exclusion, habitat modification, and pest prevention, using least‑toxic pesticides where possible.

The role requires 1–3 years' IPM experience, knowledge of regulations, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications

  • 1–3 years of IPM experience in a licensed business or public institution.
  • Knowledge of IPM practices, pest biology, sanitation, exclusion, habitat modification, and least‑toxic pesticides.
  • Experience solving pest problems in sensitive campus environments (labs, animal facilities, museums) without compromising data or collections.
  • Knowledge of county, state, and federal pesticide regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and with teams.

Responsibilities

  • Provide safe, effective pest control across campus locations using IPM techniques.
  • Advise clients on sanitation, exclusion, habitat modification, and pest prevention building design.
  • Utilize least‑toxic pesticides and ensure safety and compliance with regulations.
  • Respond to emergencies and on‑call needs; collaborate with Facilities and Safety teams.

Job description

Vaccinations Programs – Including SARS‑COV‑2 (COVID‑19)

Brief Summary Of Job Duties

Using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques, the technician will provide safe, effective, and efficient pest control services to multiple locations across campus. Responsibilities include treating nuisance animals, insects, and weeds for student and family housing, child‑care facilities, museums, research facilities, libraries, Intercollegiate Athletics, Recreational Sports, and other auxiliaries. The technician works closely with clients to advise on sanitation, exclusion, education, habitat modification, pest prevention building design, wildlife management, pesticide safety, and the use of least‑toxic pesticides.

Required Qualifications
  • 1‑3 years of experience performing Integrated Pest Management for a licensed business or public institution.
  • Knowledge of Integrated Pest Management practices and pest biology, identification, sanitation, exclusion, education, habitat modification, pest prevention building design, wildlife management, pesticide safety, and least‑toxic pesticides.
  • Experience solving pest problems in sensitive campus environments (laboratories, animal facilities, museums, rare book collections) without compromising data or collections.
  • Knowledge of county, state, and federal pesticide regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a group setting.
  • Valid California DPR Qualified Applicator’s License or Certificate Category A, or a California Structural Branch 2 license, with required CEUs maintained.
  • Availability to respond to emergencies, work on‑call, rotating swing shift, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
  • High School Diploma.
  • Knowledge and/or training in bed bug identification and control.
Special Conditions Of Employment
  • May work shifts outside Monday‑Friday to meet operational needs.
  • Maintain a valid CA driver’s license, satisfactory DMV record, and enrollment in the DMV Employee Pull‑Notice Program.
  • Satisfactory conviction‑history background check.
  • The University operates in a tobacco‑free environment.

Working Days / Hours

Multiple schedules are available:

  • Residential Operations: Monday‑Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm.
  • Facilities Management: Monday‑Friday, 5:30 am – 2:00 pm.
