Job summary

Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges is hiring for a part-time Fitness Floor position in Livingston, NJ. The role involves guiding members in safe exercise, answering questions to help reach wellness goals, and building authentic member relationships.

You’ll maintain equipment, enforce safety policies, and participate in mandatory trainings while upholding the YMCA’s core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required; related college degree preferred or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge in FMS Screening, athletic assessments and programming.
  • Experience in strength & conditioning coaching.
  • CPR, First Aid and AED certifications or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct members on safe and effective exercise techniques using weight equipment, cardio machines and free weights.
  • Answer member questions to support goals for healthy living and wellness programs.
  • Build authentic relationships with members and connect them with the YMCA.
  • Maintain knowledge of wellness trends to provide accurate information.
  • Spot weight lifters as needed.
  • Enforce safety policies and explain YMCA safety procedures.
  • Walk through and monitor the Fitness Center and report equipment issues.
  • Complete opening/closing checklists and shift sign-off where applicable.
  • Follow YMCA policies and respond to emergencies; attend trainings.
  • Demonstrate and model YMCA values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility.

Requirements
Essential Functions
  • Instruct members about safe and effective exercise techniques using exercise equipment that includes but is not limited to weight equipment, cardio machines and free weights.
  • Answer questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living. Motivate and assist members and participants with their wellness and fitness programs.
  • Build effective and authentic relationships with members; help members connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Maintain working knowledge of wellness and trend to provide effective information and support to members.
  • Assist members and participants with spotting while weight lifting.
  • Observe participants and members activities; enforce safety regulations and positively explain and interpret all YMCA safety policies.
  • Walk through and monitor the Fitness Center periodically.
  • Report any equipment problems to the Director and maintain the Fitness Center’s cleanliness.
  • Complete Fitness Floor checklist (cleaning and maintaining all equipment in Fitness Center) in its entirety.
  • Complete opening and closing checklist and sign every shift (when applicable).
  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures; respond to emergency situations.
  • Maintain required certifications.
  • Attend mandatory meetings and trainings.
  • Demonstrate and model the YMCA’s four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • Exhibit personal and professional behavior in a manner consistent with the best interest of the Association, so as not to bring discredit to the Association.
  • Perform such other job-related duties as may be periodically assigned by the Supervisor.
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Must have a high school diploma; College degree in a related field preferred or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge in FMS Screening, Athletic assessments and programing
  • Demonstrated experience in Strength & Conditioning Coaching
  • Required CPR, First Aid and AED certifications or obtain within 30 days of hire date.
  • Working knowledge of body mechanics and physical fitness principles.
  • Certification in areas of expertise.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with members and staff.
