Job description

The YMCA of Greater New York is here for all New Yorkers — to empower youth, improve health, and strengthen community. Founded in 1852, today the Y serves a diverse population of more than half a million New Yorkers who learn, grow, and thrive through programs and services at our 24 branches. Community is the cornerstone of the Y. Together, we connect active, engaged New Yorkers to build stronger communities.

To help fulfill our mission, we cultivate a culture of learning, leading, and collaboration to enhance community impact. Through our talented staff and “LEAP” career framework (Leadership, Empowerment, Accountability, Personal Growth), we are committed to a people-first approach that fosters trust, inclusion, growth, and development for all.

The Cross Island YMCA is seeking a qualified Personal Trainer who will recruit, design, and deliver safe, fun, dynamic, and effective personal training sessions while also providing outstanding hospitality to ensure a positive user experience.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Design and deliver safe, fun, dynamic, and effective personal training sessions, in person or virtually from the branch.
  2. Provide outstanding hospitality to all members and guests by initiating a professional relationship regarding their needs, concerns, and questions.
  3. Recruit new clients and retain current clients.
  4. Perform client assessments.
  5. Schedule and coordinate client sessions in a timely manner.
  6. Record and report sales and sessions to the supervisor.
  7. Be aware of current fitness programs and trends.
  8. Maintain required certifications, which are tracked in Club Connect.
  9. Utilize the app for scheduling as directed.
  10. Actively participate in training sessions and designated meetings.
  11. Have a thorough knowledge of the branch’s emergency procedures and take appropriate action in emergency situations.
  12. Support community and promotional special events as needed.
Desired Skills & Experience:
  1. High School diploma or equivalent required.
  2. Minimum of One (1) year of experience working in a health and fitness environment.
  3. Current Adult CPR and First Aid certifications.
  4. National Personal Training Certification required (ACE, ACSM, AFAA, NASM).
  5. Foundations of Listen First.
  6. Knowledge of Orientation to Healthy Living at the Y and Principles of Member Health & Wellness.
  7. Must be willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
