The Personal Support Worker (PSW) reports to the Director of Care and, under the supervision of the Unit Supervisor, provides personal care, reports changes in resident status, and documents where applicable. They support restorative care by promoting residents’ independence in activities of daily living, enhancing therapeutic bathing effects, and creating an environment that meets residents’ needs and improves their quality of life.
Responsibilities:
- Assist residents with personal care and activities of daily living as per their care plan.
- Guide residents in their activities of daily living, maximizing independence and respecting their choices and self-determination.
- Monitor residents’ physical and emotional wellbeing and report any changes to registered staff.
- Accurately document care provided during each shift, following relevant policies and procedures.
- Follow all policies, procedures, and the Code of Conduct of the home.
- Maintain professional communication with residents, families, and coworkers.
- Promote the home’s Vision, Mission, Values, and Residents’ Bill of Rights.
- Ensure the health and safety of residents, families, and staff.
- Participate in resident care conferences and team meetings, contributing to care plan development.
- Display spontaneity and a positive attitude to adapt to changing situations.
- Keep personal care items clean, labeled, and accessible to residents.
- Use a gentle, persuasive approach (GPA) when managing residents with expressive behaviors.
- Adhere to safe transfer practices and the use of mechanical lifts per policies.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and secure environment during care provision.
- Assist with meal service and provide feeding assistance as needed.
Qualifications:
- PSW Certification from a program of at least 600 hours, including practical experience.
- The program must meet the Ministry of Colleges or Universities' requirements for Ontario postsecondary institutions or district school boards.
- An RN or RPN with adequate skills and knowledge, as deemed by the Director of Care.
- Students enrolled in RN or RPN programs with sufficient skills, as assessed by the Director of Care.
- Experience with person-centered care models.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to turn tasks into positive social interactions.
- Ability to meet legal requirements, promote individual rights, and manage risk.
- Current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check and Criminal Background Check, or willingness to obtain.
- Proof of recent TB testing or chest X-ray as per health regulations.
- Two supervisory references.
- Proof of required vaccinations; staying up-to-date is recommended.
