Job description

The Personal Care Assistant, sometimes called a Personal Service Worker, provides non-medical assistance to individuals in their homes or facilities who need help with activities of daily living due to old age, sickness, disability, or other medical conditions. Personal assistance may include activities of daily living, housecleaning, laundry, meal preparation, transportation, companionship, and respite. The Personal Care Assistant delivers services in a caring and respectful manner, in accordance with relevant policies and state regulations, as applicable. The Personal Care Assistant reports to the Owner/Manager and to the Supervisor.

Education and Qualifications

High School, GED or equivalent; personal care (service) course and training meeting state requirements, as applicable. State registration or certification as required by state law. One (1) year experience as a personal care assistant in the last 3 years or similar experience. Annual tuberculosis screening showing non-infectivity for M. tuberculosis. Other health or screening tests as required by specific facilities (if doing private duty cases). Annual influenza vaccination; if the flu vaccine is declined, wear a mask during flu season while performing work duties. Valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance if driving clients or if driving on behalf of clients as part of work duties. Clear background screening and clear abuse history.

Representative Duties and Responsibilities
  • Completion of the training outlined by the state (as applicable) and the agency's initial and annual onboarding training.
  • Achieve a passing score on a competency evaluation covering state-mandated training topics.
  • Provide services in accordance with the policies and requirements of the agency as well as the service arrangements spelled out in the service plan.
  • Perform observation and maintenance of the home environment that ensures the safety and security of the client.
  • Provide assistance with household chores including cooking and meal preparation, cleaning, and laundry.
  • Provide assistance in completing activities such as shopping, and appointments outside the home.
  • Provide companionship including, but not limited to, social interaction, conversation, emotional reassurance, encouragement of reading, writing, and activities that stimulate the mind.
  • Provide assistance with activities of daily living, personal service, and any other assignments as included in the service plan, such as medication reminders within the scope permitted by applicable state regulations.
  • Complete appropriate service notes regarding services provided each visit, including documentation of the services provided, the date and time in and out of the assignment, and a confirmation that service was provided.
  • Notify the supervisor if tasks cannot be completed or of changes in the client’s condition and needs that are not according to the service plan.
  • Communicate with the agency supervisor any issues involving incidents, unexpected occurrences, injuries, and emergencies.
  • Communicate with other members of the home care team providing services in the client’s home.
  • Observe infection control established by the agency and comply with hand cleaning procedures.
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned and within the scope of permitted agency services.
