Teacher Aide
Qualifications
- Associates Degree preferred, high school diploma or GED minimum.
- Ability to follow routine oral and written instructions.
- Have some knowledge of working with the physically and mentally challenged.
- Must be able to safely lift and carry students weighing up to 45 lbs. on a daily basis an up to 60 lbs during and emergency.
- Must be able to twist, bend, sit, squat, kneel, pull, and stand.
- In accordance with Mississippi Code 37-9-17, all personnel employed by the public school system shall be required to pass a criminal background check and current child abuse registry check.
- 7In accordance with Mississippi Code 71-7-1 thru 71-7-33, all offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment drug test.
- Have a satisfactory employment record.
REPORTS TO
Building Principal, Assistant Principal, Certified Teacher
JOB GOAL
The aide will support the educational and instructional goals of the teacher by assisting the teacher in planning and developing the individualized training program for the students.
Essential Functions
- Participate in the district and school professional development programs.
- Remain alert at all times to hazards including, but not limited to the following: obstructed walkways, unsafe playground equipment, unauthorized personnel on school properties, unsafe floor surfaces, and any other unsafe conditions.
- Assist with lunch and absentee reports as directed by the teacher.
- Assist teacher in preparing materials needed for the classroom or curriculum room.
- Assist teacher in maintaining the cleanliness of the classroom by sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning tables and chairs, and maintaining a clean and orderly closet.
- Assist the students in taking part in music activities, recreational activities and playtime.
- Assist with the lunchroom duties as assigned by the Teacher and Principal. This would include setting up for lunch, helping the students get to the cafeteria, wiping the tables after students have finished eating, sweeping and/or mopping the area under and around the tables and cleaning the chairs.
- Assist as needed with the feeding and eating program. The teacher and the specialists (occupational therapist, physical therapist, speech/language pathologist) will help the aide learn the proper techniques.
- The Aide will learn how to operate all audio-visual equipment.
- Assist in bathroom duties, including giving baths when absolutely necessary. This includes changing diapers and soiled clothing. The aide will look after the students while they are on the toilet or potty-chair.
- Assist the teacher in ensuring the students are never left unattended.
- The aide will meet each bus as it arrives and assist as needed.
- Responsible for following all Safety Policies and Procedures of the Harrison County School District.
- Any other duties within the scope of this job description as assigned by the Teacher and/or Principal.
- The aide may be asked to assume the duties of the teacher and a substitute aide will be present in the event of an absence. The aide’s duties at that time would be too:
- Follow the teacher’s daily lesson plan
- Follow the regular schedule
- Go to lunch at the time the teacher’s lunch is scheduled
- Be responsible for giving instructions to the substitute aide.
Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Superintendent and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
184 days annually with salary in accordance with the Administrative Salary Schedule as approved by the Harrison County School District.
EVALUATION
Performance of the Teacher Aide will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions in the School Board Policies and Procedures.
