Job summary

Interwest Consulting Group is seeking a skilled Permit Technician to join our municipal services team in California. You will perform plan checks, interpret building and zoning codes, and issue permits to support city and county projects.

The role requires 2+ years of admin/customer service experience, construction knowledge, and familiarity with permitting processes. We offer competitive pay and benefits as part of SAFEbuilt’s national team.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of administrative/customer service experience required.
  • Building and/or construction knowledge or background preferred.
  • Permitting and/or municipal experience is a plus.
  • ICC Permit Technician Certification is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform minor technical plan checks to ensure compliance with standards and ordinances.
  • Interpret and understand engineering/building plans, standards, codes, and maps.
  • Issue and prepare permits related to plan checks.
  • Apply building code, zoning, and land use rules; follow County ROW standards and traffic control plans.
  • Research data from field verifications for engineering correspondence or public inquiries.
  • Perform permit-related monetary transactions, accounts receivable coding, billing inquiries, and invoicing.
  • Coordinate routing of permits, plans, and maps using permit-tracking programs.
  • Respond to development-related inquiries and complaints.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • P erform minor technical plan check to ensure compliance with both Public Works and Building Department standards, submittal requirements, development conditions, improvement standards, construction specifications, and city ordinances.
  • Interpret and understand engineering and/or building plans, improvements standards, construction standards, building codes, maps, and legal descriptions.
  • Issue and prepare permits related to plan check to ensure compliance with both Public Works and Building Department standards, development conditions, improvement standards, construction specifications, and city ordinances.
  • Understanding and applying building code, zoning and land use rules and regulations, County ROW standard plans and traffic control plans and other State and County ordinances.
  • Research and compile data from field verifications or office engineering records for inclusion into engineering correspondence, reports, or in response to public inquiry.
  • Perform permit-related monetary transactions, accounts receivable coding, billing inquiries, and invoicing.
  • Perform various administrative, reporting, billing and accounts receivable tasks.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relations with general public, development community, city staff, and others contacted during course of work.
  • Ability to manage a wide range of duties in a timely and effective manner, including timely plan processing and routing and coordinating with discipline managers (e.g. Planning, Engineering and Building).
  • Respond and assist in the resolution of development related inquiries and complaints.
  • Evaluate alternative solutions and develop and present recommendations to supervisors.
  • Perform data entry and coordinate routing of various permits, plans, and maps; use specialized database/permit tracking programs.
  • Perform mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy.
SKILLS:
  • Must possess the flexibility to adjust to changing workload volume.
  • Must be highly organized.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  • 2+ years of administrative/customer service experience required
  • Building and/or construction knowledge or background preferred
  • Permitting and/or municipal experience is a plus
  • ICC Permit Technician Certification is a plus
