Job summary

Henrico County Public Schools is seeking substitutes to provide instruction in the assigned school, delivering lessons, assessments, and behavior management as needed.

Substitutes will implement lesson plans, differentiate instruction, and collaborate with staff to maintain a positive learning environment while supporting student achievement and safety.

Position requires flexibility to cover daily to long-term assignments and adherence to all district policies and procedures.

Qualifications

• Must have 60 semester hours or 2 years experience with children.
• Must complete Child Abuse and Neglect Recognition and Intervention training.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and intervene to ensure student safety.

Responsibilities

• Improvises lessons in emergency situations where the teacher is unable to provide detailed lesson plans.
• Plans, prepares and delivers appropriate curriculum content to students.
• Establishes and communicates clear objectives for all learning activities.
• Uses the curriculum of the district to plan daily instructional activities.
• Remains current in best practices for instructional delivery, assessment and behavior management.
• Assesses student learning using multiple tools and adapts instruction to student needs.
• Collaborates with faculty in planning and delivering instruction to students.
• Communicates regularly with parents, administration, and other staff.

General Statement of Duties

The employee in this classification provides instruction to students in the assigned school.

Assumes responsibility for all aspects of classroom instruction, assessments and behavior management on a short term or long term basis. Implements teacher created lesson plans or works collaboratively with a team of educators to generate lesson plans, providing differentiated strategies to instruct students at all levels in all content areas.

The daily assignment within that school will vary depending upon the need for substitutes.

Essential Duties

• Improvises lessons in emergency situations where the teacher is unable to provide detailed lesson plans
• Plans, prepares and delivers appropriate curriculum content to students
• Establishes and communicates clear objectives for all learning activities
• Uses the curriculum of the district to plan daily instructional activities
• Remains current in best practices for instructional delivery, assessment and behavior management
• Assesses student learning using multiple tools on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group/individual needs
• Creates positive educational climate for students
• Maintains order within the classroom setting in accordance with division guidelines regarding student behavior management
• Supervises students in non-classroom time (before school, after school, student activities, and fire drills)
• Collaborates with other faculty in planning and delivering instruction to students
• Communicates regularly with parents, administration, and other staff as needed
• Incorporates and models appropriate use of technology to support instruction and student learning
• Ensures compliance with existing applicable federal and state statutes and local policies, regulations and guidelines related to public schools
• Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements

Must have a minimum of 60 semester hours of college credit or 2 years experience working with children.

Must complete Child Abuse and Neglect Recognition and Intervention training Recognition and Intervention training.

Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 to 50 pounds occasionally, and may assist, move, or restrain students when required to intervene in student safety issues. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, lift, walk, stand, and hear.
