Job description

Essential Job Functions:

1. Assign ICD10CM and PCS codes to hospital inpatient visits
2. Review and analyze medical records and autosuggested computer-assisted codes (CAC) for accurate ICD diagnosis/procedure code assignment, present on admission indicators, hierarchical condition categories, complications, and comorbidities, following official coding resources to ensure accurate DRG assignment.
3. Meet a 95% accuracy rate in audits
4. Maintain productivity of 2.75 charts per hour after training
5. Review and code patient records in hospital inpatient services
6. Audit CAC software autosuggested codes for accuracy
7. Review clinical documentation to ensure accurate representation of patient's clinical picture, treatments, and diagnoses; identify missing, non-specific, or inconsistent documentation and take steps to obtain necessary information
8. Identify and enter data elements for abstraction
9. Meet coding accuracy and productivity standards
10. Understand basic natural language processing technology
11. Apply broad guidelines to specific coding situations independently, utilizing discretion and analytic ability
12. Understand how diagnosis and procedure codes impact reimbursement, reporting, quality, and strategic planning
13. Stay current with coding and industry changes through ongoing education
14. Demonstrate thorough knowledge of hospital inpatient coding

Qualifications

• Must Have Skills/Experience:
• Clear inpatient coding experience on resume
• 2+ years acute inpatient coding experience
• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)

Preferred Skills/Experience

• Associate or Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management
