Job description
Essential Job Functions:
- Assign ICD10CM and PCS codes to hospital inpatient visits
- Review and analyze medical records and autosuggested computer-assisted codes (CAC) for accurate ICD diagnosis/procedure code assignment, present on admission indicators, hierarchical condition categories, complications, and comorbidities, following official coding resources to ensure accurate DRG assignment.
- Meet a 95% accuracy rate in audits
- Maintain productivity of 2.75 charts per hour after training
- Review and code patient records in hospital inpatient services
- Audit CAC software autosuggested codes for accuracy
- Review clinical documentation to ensure accurate representation of patient's clinical picture, treatments, and diagnoses; identify missing, non-specific, or inconsistent documentation and take steps to obtain necessary information
- Identify and enter data elements for abstraction
- Meet coding accuracy and productivity standards
- Understand basic natural language processing technology
- Apply broad guidelines to specific coding situations independently, utilizing discretion and analytic ability
- Understand how diagnosis and procedure codes impact reimbursement, reporting, quality, and strategic planning
- Stay current with coding and industry changes through ongoing education
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of hospital inpatient coding
Qualifications
- Must Have Skills/Experience:
- Clear inpatient coding experience on resume
- 2+ years acute inpatient coding experience
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
Preferred Skills/Experience
- Associate or Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management
