Job summary

Lehigh Valley Health Network seeks an OR support assistant to help nursing staff in patient positioning, transferring anesthetized patients, and pre/post-operative room cleaning. This role provides non-technical support to the nursing team in a fast-paced surgical environment.

You will collaborate with the surgical team to ensure safe patient transport, proper instrument availability, and adherence to infection control standards. Strong communication and teamwork are essential.

• Ensures availability of instruments and supplies and assists with opening of supplies and instruments.
• Provides emotional support during pre-operative contact with the patient, as observed by nurses.
• Performs cleaning and disinfection of the operating rooms after surgical cases.
• Performs care and handling of patient specimens.

Summary

Assists nursing staff in the rooms with patient care by positioning, transferring of anesthetized patients, and cleaning operating rooms at the conclusion of surgical cases. Provides general non‑technical assistance to the nursing staff.

Job Duties

• Participates in activities designed to increase the productivity and efficiency of the operating room.
• Promotes a positive patient surgical experience by partnering with the surgical team to provide excellence in customer service within the surgical environment with age-appropriate responsibilities.
• Assists with the transportation of patients to and from the operating room.
• Ensures availability of instruments and supplies needed and assists with opening of supplies and instruments.
• Provides emotional support during pre-operative contact with the patient, as observed by the unit and department nurses.
• Performs effective cleaning and disinfection of the operating rooms after surgical cases.
• Performs appropriate care and handling of patient specimens.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED
• Demonstrates mature and conscientious behavior.
• Demonstrates sound judgment and technical skills.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support - State of Pennsylvania within 90 Days

Additional Qualifications: Physical Demands

Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Examples: Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient's weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift. *Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
