Periop-101/Transition to Practice OR Nurse

Signature Healthcare’s Brockton Hospital is hiring full-time Registered Nurses (RN) for a Periop-101/Transition to Practice program in the Operating Room.

Type: Full-time Flex (07:00-15:30, 5 days a week or 07:00-17:30, 4 days a week) with call requirements.

Shift: Varied 1st shift.

The Operating Room and Ambulatory Surgery Unit

The Main Operating Room and Ambulatory Surgery Unit at Brockton Hospital facilitate approximately 3,800 procedures annually across various service lines, including General, Hand, Ortho, Plastics, Vascular, GYN, Thoracic, Urology, ENT, and Podiatry. Our OR nurses play vital roles in pre-op duties and intra-operative care, making this a dynamic and essential part of patient care.

Periop-101 at Brockton Hospital

Transition to Perioperative Nursing involves a 5–6-month orientation with evidence-based modules (AORN Periop-101), classroom learning, simulation, and clinical experiences. During the first 3 months, work hours are 07:00-15:30. Staff must pass the Periop-101 final exam. The program includes training in multiple surgical specialties. At the end of orientation, staff will fulfill call requirements with a 30-minute response time.

Specific Duties

  • Complete preadmission assessments, review medications, and ensure all paperwork and diagnostics are complete.
  • Assess patient status on admission to the OR.
  • Provide safe, quality care using nursing process and diagnosis, with timely documentation.
  • Ensure organized and timely patient care provision.
  • Communicate patient conditions effectively to team members.
  • Carry out physician’s orders accurately and document activities.
  • Participate in pre- and post-op calls and communicate issues as needed.
  • Maintain competencies for the RN role.

General Duties

  • Assess patient health data.
  • Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses.
  • Identify expected outcomes.
  • Develop and implement care plans.
  • Evaluate and document patient progress.
  • Administer medications and IV solutions safely.
  • Report significant changes to physicians.
  • Educate and counsel patients and families.
  • Support patients and families emotionally.
  • Evaluate quality of nursing care.
  • Stay current with practice standards and regulations.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team.
  • Use clinical inquiry and resource considerations in practice.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school.
  • Massachusetts RN licensure.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications (AHA).
  • Meditech experience preferred.
  • No prior OR experience required.
