Richard D. Wood Jr. Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment
The Department of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and the Richard D. Wood Jr. Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) are seeking a licensed psychologist with expertise in pediatric, clinical, medical, and women’s health psychology.
The psychologist will work as part of the psychosocial support team within the Richard D. Wood Jr. Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment (CFDT), a center that specializes in caring for pregnant patients carrying babies with prenatally diagnosed fetal abnormalities. The psychologist position will focus on providing outpatient individual and couples psychotherapy services and offering specific interventions for antepartum patients experiencing maternal and fetal complications while preparing expectant parents for intrauterine procedures, labor and delivery, and the transition into ICU parenting. The Garbose Family Special Delivery Unit (SDU) is the world’s first birthing unit dedicated to healthy mothers of babies with known birth defects. It is located in a pediatric hospital. The psychologist will collaborate closely with the inpatient multidisciplinary team of maternal-fetal medicine providers, obstetricians, certified nurse midwives, and nurses to care for pregnant patients on bedrest and in the immediate postpartum period. The position will also include supporting grieving parents as they consider pregnancy options, cope with selection reduction procedures, or experience an unexpected loss in pregnancy or of their newborn.
The psychologist will collaborate with psychosocial and multidisciplinary care teams in both settings. The position will include the assessment and treatment of expectant parents in the prenatal period following a diagnosis of a fetal abnormality, and with postpartum parents and other caregivers while their baby receives care in either the newborn/infant or cardiac intensive care unit. The provider will assess for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and offer short-term interventions to parents and couples at risk. The position will also include co-facilitation of parent support groups as well as continuity of postpartum services for identified families, with a primary focus on emotional coping and supporting the continued stressors of ICU parenting.
