Responsibilities

  • Monitors circulatory process and takes action when abnormalities arise.
  • Ensures sterility and correct setup of disposable equipment.
  • Operates the heart-lung machine, blood gas analyzer, clotting time/heparin analyzer, and related devices.
  • Mixes and administers drugs and solutions, adjusting gas flow as needed.
  • Records perfusion data during and after surgery and evaluates postoperative data.
  • Performs quality control and preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.

Perfusionist Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Texas

Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) is a flagship hospital of Baylor Scott & White Health and a 914‑bed Level 1 Trauma Center located at 3500 Gaston Ave, Dallas, TX 75246. The perfusion department is expanding and offers relocation assistance. This position is full‑time with a variable schedule and on‑call responsibilities.

Job Summary

The Perfusionist operates extracorporeal circulation equipment to support or replace cardiopulmonary, circulatory, or respiratory function during surgical or medical procedures. Responsibilities include selecting equipment, monitoring physiologic parameters, administering drugs and solutions, maintaining sterility, performing quality control, and documenting perfusion data.

Essential Functions
  • Monitors circulatory process and initiates appropriate action when abnormalities arise.
  • Ensures sterility and integrity of disposable equipment and correct setup and breakdown.
  • Operates the heart‑lung machine, blood gas analyzer, clotting time/heparin analyzer, and cardiac‑help devices.
  • Mixes and administers drugs and solutions, adjusting gas flow and mixtures to maintain safe and effective procedures.
  • Records relevant perfusion information during and after surgery and evaluates post‑operative data.
  • Performs quality control and preventive maintenance to ensure equipment accuracy and longevity.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.
Key Success Factors
  • Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and biology.
  • Understanding of cardiac diseases, defects, and congenital anomalies.
  • Familiarity with sterile and perfusion supplies and cannulation techniques for adult, pediatric, and infant patients.
  • Expertise in blood component theory and the use of blood products with extracorporeal circuits.
  • Skill in operating extracorporeal circulation and autotransfusion equipment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to follow orders, execute written perfusion protocols, and communicate clearly during operations.
  • Competence in applying regulatory and accreditation standards for operating room procedures.
  • Team‑oriented approach and flexibility in patient‑care delivery.
  • Calmness and composure in stressful situations.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited perfusion program.
  • Experience: 1‑2 years of intermediate‑level perfusion experience.
  • Certification/License: Current Cert Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) and Licensed Perfusionist (PERFUSIO) from the Texas Medical Board; Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire.
