Job description

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Under the general supervision of a Dean, provide skilled and complex technical support for a variety of theatrical, dance, music, and related live events, including set design and construction, lighting and sound, and related functions.

There is currently one full‑time (12 months/year, 40 hours/week) vacancy located at Moorpark College. This position requires occasional weekends, evenings, and overtime work based on operational needs.

This recruitment is being conducted to establish a list of eligible candidates that will be used to fill district‑wide, current and upcoming, non‑bilingual and bilingual, temporary and regular vacancies for the duration of the list, not to exceed one year.

• Design, coordinate, and provide technical support for rigging, lighting, sound, stage carpentry, and set construction for a variety of live events held at a performing arts center. E
• Coordinate use of the performing arts center for a wide variety of live events, including theatrical productions, corporate training, music and dance concerts, and related activities; open the center for events; check stage lighting, ventilation, sound, and other equipment to ensure proper operation; assist with publicity as required. E
• Participate in meetings related to performing arts center functions; attend staff, campus, and committee meetings as necessary. E
• Recommend stage equipment and supplies to be ordered; requisition items; pick up equipment and supplies when necessary; provide input regarding event budgets; order, inventory, store, receive, issue, and check tools, lighting, sound, cabinets, equipment, costumes, construction materials and supplies; maintain inventory and control records of materials and equipment needed. • Assist the instructional staff with the coordination of laboratory training procedures and student crews to ensure the development of students in the technical areas. E
• Prepare and administer sound for productions and live events by operating various mixers, sound consoles, and related equipment; create sound effects based on specifications provided by the Technical Director. E
• Construct and repair sets and scenery for various productions and live events using a variety of equipment including radial, table, circular, and vertical saws, welding tools, and other hand and power tools. E
• Mix and apply a wide variety of paints and flame proofing or fire‑retardant chemicals to sets. E
• Perform rigging and flying of curtains, backdrops, special props, and other apparatus required for a production or event; operate a stage counterweight system. E
• Operate lighting equipment, video and multimedia equipment, and computer controlled light consoles; hang, install, and prepare lighting for various productions and live events. E
• Prepare, review, interpret, and implement working plans, drawings, blueprints, props, light plots, and other written and verbal information concerning a wide variety of performing arts productions and live events. E
• Investigate, diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve a wide variety of technical malfunctions. E
• Provide guidance, technical direction, and training to staff and student workers in the safe and proper use of tools and equipment used in rigging, lighting, stage carpentry, set construction and related functions; monitor work for quality, completeness, and adherence to applicable safety standards. E
• Communicate with a variety of other departments and outside agencies; answer inquiries related to a variety of events. E
• Interpret and enforce fire, safety, and health regulations for the protection and safety of facility users and audiences. E
• Provide technical assistance and supervision at the facility when rented by off‑campus groups; attend meetings with representatives of outside groups to plan and organize presentations and productions. E
• Perform basic clerical duties related to the maintenance and efficiency of the performing arts center productions and college instructional programs. E
• Work collaboratively and professionally with faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, and ethnic communities. E
• Demonstrate cultural humility, sensitivity, and equity‑mindfulness in working with individuals from diverse communities; model inclusive behaviors; and achieve equity in assignment‑related outcomes. E

Graduation from high school or its equivalent AND four years of experience in two or more of the following areas: prop design, prop construction, stage set design, stage set construction, rigging, lighting, sound, and operation/use of stage equipment.

OR an associate degree with coursework in theatre arts, technical theatre, or a related field AND three years of experience in two or more of the following areas: prop design, prop construction, stage set design, stage set construction, rigging, lighting, sound, and operation/use of stage equipment.

OR a bachelor's degree in theatre arts, technical theatre, fine arts, lighting, stage design or related field AND two years of experience in two or more of the following areas: prop design, prop construction, stage set design, stage set construction, rigging, lighting, sound, and operation/use of stage equipment.

OR a graduate degree in theatre arts, technical theatre, fine arts, lighting, stage design or related field AND one year of experience in two or more of the following areas: prop design, prop construction, stage set design, stage set construction, rigging, lighting, sound, and operation/use of stage equipment.

Valid California Driver's License.

SALARY PLACEMENT

New Employees: Generally, new employees are placed on the first step of the appropriate range of the salary schedule.

Current Employees: An employee who is promoted will be placed on the salary step of the new range of the appropriate salary schedule that provides a minimum increase comparable to a one-step increase in salary.

New and current employees may be eligible for advanced step placement as outlined in Section 290 – SALARY PLAN in the Rules of the Personnel Commission for Classified Employees.

EXAMINATION AND SELECTION PROCESS

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (T&E) EVALUATION

A T&E is an assessment of training and experience, beyond the minimum requirements, that has prepared the candidate for the position as evidenced in the application materials. Please be sure to answer every component of each supplemental question, as your responses will be scored and serve as your score on the training and experience (T&E) evaluation.

The candidates with the highest passing scores on the T&E will be invited to the technical interview.

TECHNICAL INTERVIEW DATE RANGE AND LOCATION

Date Range: Monday, October, 26, 2026 – Friday, October, 30, 2026

Location: The Technical Interview will be conducted remotely, using Zoom. To participate, you must have access to a computer with a camera, microphone, speakers, and a reliable connection to the internet.

The examination components and dates are subject to change as needs dictate. All communication regarding this process will be delivered via email.

SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications as stated, including the possession of licenses, certifications, or other requirements, by the filing deadline in order to move forward in the recruitment process. You must attach copies of any documents that demonstrate your attainment of the minimum qualifications (e.g., unofficial transcripts, foreign transcript evaluation, copies of any required licenses, and/or certifications). Failure to submit any required documents may result in disqualification. All required documentation must be attached to your application.

ELIGIBILITY LIST

Upon completion of the examination, the eligibility list will be compiled by combining the final examination score with applicable seniority and veteran's credits, if any. The candidates will be ranked according to their total score on the eligibility list. Certification will be made from the highest three ranks of the eligibility list. This eligibility list will be used to fill current vacancies for up to one year from the date of the technical interview.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD

All appointments made from eligibility lists for initial appointment or for promotion, with certain exceptions, shall be probationary for a period of six (6) months or one hundred thirty (130) days of paid service, whichever is longer. Classified management, police, and designated executive classifications shall be probationary for a period of one (1) year of paid service from initial appointment or promotion.
