Description

Employed by PAGNY for The Division of Correctional Health Services (CHS) of New York City Health + Hospitals (H+H), this role involves delivering medical care, mental health care, and discharge planning within the jail system. Approximately 25% of new admissions to the NYC jail system annually will receive care from this service. It aims to provide safe, holistic, and evidence-based therapeutic interventions for diverse mental health issues, from serious mental illness to the natural struggles of incarceration. The service offers comprehensive treatment modalities, including specialty housing units, a 24-hour psychiatric service, creative arts programming, DBT training, clinics in each facility, substance use treatment, re-entry services, and collaborations with training institutions across the city.

Responsibilities
  • Provide psychiatric care, including evaluations, follow-ups, and urgent consultations for mental health patients.
  • Consult with non-prescribing mental health and medical staff regarding diagnosis and treatment.
  • Participate in team meetings regularly, with frequency depending on the work setting.
  • Develop and review individual treatment plans.
  • Assess patients for higher levels of care, including hospitalization, and maintain contact with psychiatric staff during hospitalizations.
  • Document all activities promptly and clearly in the electronic medical record.
  • Supervise psychiatric nurse practitioners and physician assistants as needed.
  • Engage in weekly supervision with psychiatric leadership.
  • Supervise psychiatric volunteers, including residents or fellows, with appropriate documentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisory staff.

This position is located on Rikers Island.

Schedule: Monday: 8am-4pm

Qualifications
  • Doctor of Medicine degree.
  • Valid New York State medical license.
  • Completion of a 4-year US-accredited psychiatric residency.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry (ABPN).
  • Minimum 2 years' experience with individuals with serious mental illness in an institutional setting.
