Job summary

The University Medical Center of Southern Nevada (UMC) invites applications for a Pharmacy Intern role, working under a licensed pharmacist to deliver pharmaceutical care for patients in acute and ambulatory settings.

Enrollment in a College of Pharmacy is required with Nevada State Board prerequisites to obtain and maintain an intern or technician certificate. First/second year students preferred; per diem schedule with no benefits provided.

Job Summary

Provides patient care by performing distributional, clinical, educational, informational, and supervisory functions for the pharmaceutical care of patients in acute and/or ambulatory services. The Intern performs all duties and tasks under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The development of skills and competencies is progressive over the total number of hours required for licensure as a pharmacist.

Job Requirement
Education/Experience

Valid full time enrollment in a College of Pharmacy; satisfaction of the minimum requirements of education and training required by the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy to acquire and maintain a Pharmacy Intern or Pharmacy Technician certificate.

Licensing/Certification Requirements

Valid State of Nevada Certification as a Pharmacy Intern or Pharmacy Technician.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements
Knowledge of

Federal, state and county laws and regulations related to the compounding, dispensing, storage and use of medications; pharmacy standards of practice; supervisory principles and practices; controlled substance record keeping and reporting; drug indications, dosage regimen, drug‑drug, drug‑disease, and drug‑nutrient interactions; pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics; compounding techniques; aseptic techniques; physical properties of drugs; mainframe and personal computers; department and hospital safety practices and procedures; patient rights; infection control policies and practices; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures; age specific patient care practices.

Skill in

Reading and interpreting physicians' orders; reading patient's clinical diagnosis and recommending most appropriate medication regimen; re‑prioritizing work in response to changing situation; handling, disposing and managing hazardous materials; effectively supervising assigned staff; communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio‑economic and ethnic backgrounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Mobility to work in a typical clinical setting and use standard equipment, stamina to remain standing and/or walk for extended periods of time, vision to read printed materials and VDT screens, hearing and speech to communicate effectively in‑person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The work requires handling medications classified as hazardous materials.
