Job summary

Qualifications

• One year as a Laboratory Assistant I or the equivalent of two years full-time work experience in a clinical laboratory, crime laboratory or related unit involving preparation of media, acids, chemical reagents and sterilization of equipment.

Responsibilities

• May assist in preparation of tests under supervision; prepares bacteriological media and specimens for shipping; maintains accurate records.
• Operates autoclaves, distilling apparatus, centrifuges and glassware washer; performs operator maintenance on equipment.
• With training, performs venous and skin punctures to obtain blood samples for test purposes.
• Maintains glassware and cleans/disinfects work areas; prepares and sterilizes supplies and equipment.
• Makes solutions of acids and reagents; prepares reagents per formulas and procedures.
• Collects specimens from wards and routes to the proper lab; records test results in charts.
• Maintains stocks and records of laboratory supplies and materials.
• Performs clerical duties such as charging slips, logging requests and recording temperatures; handles evidence as needed.
• With proper training, performs venous and skin punctures to obtain blood samples for test purposes.
