People and Operations Manager - (POPS_105)

Job Title: People and Operations Manager

Location: San Francisco

Years of Experience: 3-5

Job Description: Handel Architects is an internationally recognized architecture and interior design firm dedicated to design excellence, with offices in San Francisco, New York City, Boston, and Hong Kong. Our San Francisco office focuses on innovative mixed-use and multi-family residential projects that enhance the urban fabric and support sustainable living.

Our San Francisco studio is seeking a People and Operations Manager to help support firm leadership with daily operations, strategic initiatives, and to promote a positive, productive, and inclusive work environment throughout the employee life cycle. This role will be based in San Francisco, supporting local office needs while also assisting the Director of People and Culture and contributing to firmwide initiatives.

This is an exciting opportunity to collaborate with a dynamic group of architects and designers to shape a vibrant and engaging office culture. In this role, you'll have the flexibility and creative freedom to bring ideas to life—whether it’s organizing events, fostering connection, or finding new ways to keep morale high and creativity flowing. You'll be part of a team that values collaboration, innovation, and fun, with plenty of support to turn great ideas into action. If you're a ‘people person’ who can bring energy to the studio and encourage engagement, this role is for you!

Our San Francisco office operates on a hybrid schedule, with in-office work Monday–Thursday, and remote-optional work on Fridays.

How You’ll Contribute:

  • Manage the full employee lifecycle, including recruiting, hiring, onboarding, training, and offboarding.
  • Maintain and update employee records and office policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure compliance and alignment with best practices.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for general employee questions and concerns.
  • Coordinate with firm-wide resources including our Finance team, IT team, firm partners and principals, and leaders of various office committees.
  • Support with benefits administration, payroll, visa processes, and employee leaves of absence.
  • Facilitate performance review processes and engagement with professional development resources (e.g., mentorship program and other technical and soft skills training opportunities).
  • Lead the planning and execution of regular and seasonal office events, initiatives, and social activities that enhance engagement and connection within the studio.
  • Maintain physical operations for a healthy, high-functioning office space, including managing vendor relationships and contracts.

What You Bring:

  • A bachelor's degree and 3-5 years of experience in administrative work with people and operations responsibilities.
  • Strong communication skills—verbal, written, and interpersonal—along with excellent organizational and administrative abilities.
  • A proactive and adaptable mindset, with the ability to learn quickly and navigate changing priorities.
  • Collaborative and inclusive leadership style.
  • A keen eye for detail and the ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion and good judgment.
  • A positive attitude and willingness to contribute at all levels.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with HR software like Deltek Talent is a plus.
  • A passion for fostering company culture through programs, events, and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Previous experience in an architecture or design firm is a plus, but not required.
  • Familiarity with recruitment and visa processes is a bonus.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary Range: $80,000-$90,000
  • Health Benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, Life)
