Job description
Position Summary

Accepting applications for the 2025–2026 school year. Working from your secure and distraction-free home office, certified Special Education Substitute Teachers will support students in Pennsylvania. Using the telephone, Internet, and various curriculum tools, the Substitute Teacher will consult regularly with students, Learning Coaches, and school personnel to ensure each child successfully completes their instructional program.

Special Education Substitute Teachers will act as teacher of record during periods of short- or long-term absences or vacancies ranging from 2–20 weeks, with the average assignment lasting 8–12 weeks. This is a part-time position with no benefits.

Responsibilities

When on assignment, be online and available to students, parents, and school staff Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) to:

  • Communicate with parents, students, and other teachers to update individualized learning plans, provide feedback, monitor assignment completion, and verify student learning.
  • Complete grading, generate progress reports, and conduct parent conferences in a timely manner.
  • Support instruction through synchronous and asynchronous web conferencing sessions (LiveLessons).
  • Adapt instructional strategies to meet the needs of students with IEPs and 504 plans in the virtual setting.
  • Collaborate closely with general educators, school counselors, and related service providers to ensure IEP goals and accommodations are implemented.
  • Track progress toward IEP goals, maintain special education documentation, and participate in IEP meetings as required.
  • Keep student records current, including cumulative files, attendance, logs, and IEP compliance tracking.
  • When not on assignment, actively check email to remain informed of upcoming placements and Substitute Services updates.
  • Meet at least monthly with an assigned Substitute Services supervisor via video conference.
  • Complete required professional learning targeted at individual needs throughout the year.
  • Maintain active Pennsylvania certification(s).
Requirements
  • Current, active Pennsylvania teaching certificate with Special Education certification required.
  • Additional PA certifications (Elementary, Math, Science, English, Social Studies) are a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Dedicated, distraction-free home working environment.
  • Availability Monday through Friday during school hours (typically 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. ET).
  • Strong understanding of IEPs/504s and experience implementing them in instructional practice.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage time effectively.
  • Proficiency with technology (learning management systems, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace).
  • Reliable, high-speed internet access.
  • Microsoft OS- and Office-equipped computer (PC preferred).
  • Must not provide care for others during school hours while on assignment; alternate care arrangements required.
  • May not work another job during school hours while on assignment.
  • Completion of required orientation/training within 30 days of hire and annually at the start of each school year.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings, as needed, to support families.
  • Must be able to use a personal device and email for two-step authentication.
