Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's PennDOT Bradford County division seeks a CDL Operator to perform highway and bridge maintenance using trucks, loaders, and related equipment. Day-to-day work includes equipment operation, safety procedures, and constant attention to road and public safety.

The role requires a PA CDL license (Class A or B) with air brake and manual transmission restrictions removed, plus valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate.

Qualifications

• Active PA CDL license (Class A or B) with air brake and manual transmission restrictions removed.
• Completion of a CDL training program or equivalent experience.
• Possession of Medical Examiner’s Certificate and Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during probation.

Responsibilities

• Use hand and power tools for cutting brush, cleaning culverts and more.
• Follow safety procedures and report hazards promptly.
• Perform flagger duties to guide motorists through work zones.

This position supports highway and bridge maintenance by operating equipment and performing hands-on tasks to keep transportation routes safe. The role involves skilled equipment operation, manual labor, and attention to safety in all work conditions. As a PennDOT CDL Operator, you will perform the following duties:

• Equipment Operation: Operate trucks, loaders, and other assigned equipment for highway and bridge work
• Tool Use: Use hand and power tools to complete tasks such as cutting brush, cleaning culverts, digging ditches, and repairing barriers
• Safety Practices: Follow safety procedures, remain aware of surroundings, and report incidents or hazards immediately
• Traffic Control: Perform flagger duties to guide motorists safely through work areas
• Equipment Care: Complete pre and post operation checks, perform minor repairs, and maintain equipment records
• Field Support: Assist mechanics with repairs and make adjustments to ensure safe equipment operation

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Overtime, travel, and shift work may be required. Dual shifts in effect November through March.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
• Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $45,888 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
• Graduation from a Commercial Driver’s License Training School; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

• This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake (L) and Manual Transmission (E) Restrictions removed.
• This position requires employees to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
• This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
• This position requires possession of an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
• This position requires possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
• Employees in this position are required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.

Additional Requirements:

• This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.
