Description of Work

As an Equipment Operator with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, you will help maintain road safety and efficiency, particularly during winter months when snow removal is essential. Responsibilities include snow plowing and contributing to various construction projects. You will perform physically demanding tasks and collaborate with the team to meet goals.

You will operate heavy machinery and perform minor repairs and routine maintenance on equipment and trucks. You will also maintain detailed records by completing daily logs and reports that track equipment usage and maintenance history. Meticulous documentation supports operational efficiency and accountability.

Work Schedule and Additional Information
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours: 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30-minute lunch
  • Travel, overtime, and shift work required; hours may change seasonally
  • Telework: Not available
  • Salary: Starting salary may be non-negotiable in some cases

Required Experience, Training & Eligibility
Qualifications
  • Minimum Experience and Training:
    • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth title or equivalent Federal Government title as determined by the Office of Administration)
    • or Graduation from a Commercial Driver's License Training School
    • or An equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Special Requirements:
    • Valid Pennsylvania Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed
    • Valid Medical Examiner's Certificate per FMCSA regulations
  • Conditions of Employment:
    • Active certification in heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period
    • May require CDL endorsements and certifications for specific equipment
    • Some positions require operation of vehicles/equipment with manual transmission
    • Subject to Drug and Alcohol testing per Federal Regulations
  • Additional Requirement: Ability to perform essential job functions
