Job summary

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of Transportation (PennDOT) seeks a CDL Operator in Harrisburg to maintain roads and bridges with local work. You’ll operate trucks and loaders, perform snow removal, flag traffic, and assist mechanics while supporting highway upkeep.

The role runs 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday–Friday with a 30-minute lunch. Telework is not available; starting salary may be non-negotiable and veterans are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program or equivalent
  • Graduation from a Commercial Driver’s License Training School or equivalent
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training

Responsibilities

  • Operate trucks, loaders, and additional equipment for maintenance activities
  • Use trucks with plow attachments to clear snow from roadways and bridges
  • Perform flagger duties to help manage traffic when not operating equipment
  • Complete tasks using various tools to maintain roads, bridges, culverts, and roadside areas
  • Make field adjustments, perform minor repairs, and assist mechanics with equipment fixes
  • Follow safety procedures, observe work areas, and report hazards or incidents immediately

This role focuses on operating construction and maintenance equipment and performing manual labor tasks that support highway and bridge upkeep. As a PennDOT CDL Operator, you will perform the following duties:

  • Equipment Operation:Operate trucks, loaders, and additional equipment for maintenance activities
  • Snow Removal:Use trucks with plow attachments to clear snow from roadways and bridges

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Hours may vary and overtime may be required during weather events.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Graduation from a Commercial Driver’s License Training School; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
  • All permanent employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
  • All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed.
  • All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
  • All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
Additional Requirements:
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
