This trainee position involves the operation of highway construction and maintenance equipment, including snow removal activities using plow attachments on roadways and bridges during winter months. The role requires the operation of loaders and other machinery, with the expectation of obtaining certification for at least two additional pieces of equipment during the probationary period, culminating in a minimum of six total certifications. The trainee will also engage in various manual labor tasks as part of a highway or bridge maintenance crew, which includes flagging and traffic control.
Training will focus on obtaining the necessary licensing and certification to operate heavy construction equipment, specifically Heavy Truck/Tandem Axle (HT/TA) and loaders with a bucket capacity of 4.5 cubic yards or less. The trainee will learn to conduct and document essential pre- and post-operation checks, as well as make field adjustments to ensure safe operation and reduce equipment wear.
Additionally, the position requires the operation of various hand and foot controls, the use of seat belts, and the installation and removal of tire chains on dual wheels. The trainee will also be trained to perform a range of manual labor tasks using both motorized and non-motorized hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, hammers, and chain saws. Proper selection and use of tools will be emphasized to minimize wear and breakage, along with the importance of reporting any missing or damaged equipment.
