Job summary

Tyler Junior College is seeking Student Assistants for the on-campus tutoring center. You will tutor students one-on-one, guide independent learning, and maintain accurate records of visits and timesheets. You will collaborate with professional tutors and participate in workshops to support student success.

The role requires fluency in English, a 3.0 GPA, and enrollment in at least 6 hours. A new tutor orientation is required, with emphasis on confidentiality and safe learning spaces.

Qualifications

• Must obtain a teacher’s letter of recommendation.
• Must be able to work on campus.
• Must be able to speak fluently in English for clear communication with students in sessions.
• Must attend a new tutor orientation.

Responsibilities

• Tutor students during one-to-one appointments on campus to identify and address understanding subject content and writing concerns.
• Guide and support students toward independent learning by suggesting and modeling study skills and proper practices for college success.
• Keep precise records of student visits/no-shows and personal work timesheet.
• Ask open-ended, probing questions to promote students’ active involvement and to assess knowledge and retention.
• Maintain confidentiality.
• Help maintain noise level at an appropriate indoor volume and cleanliness of the center.
• Assist with workshops when asked.
• Work as a team with professional and peer tutors to help and support each other.
• Reflect and improve upon tutoring techniques by researching tutoring methods during downtime.
• Report problems to the Director, Front Desk Staff, and Managers, as well as on tutor reports.
• Ensure that the center continues to function as a safe learning space for students.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

*Student Assistant positions are subject to a maximum of 18 hours per week.

• Tutor students during one-to-one appointments on campus to identify and address understanding subject content and writing concerns.
• Guide and support students toward independent learning by suggesting and modeling study skills and proper practices for college success.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

No Direct Supervision

Work Environment:

Work may be required outside of normal business hours.

Physical Demands:

Work involves walking, standing, lifting (up to approximately 25 lbs.), extended periods of sitting, pushing, bending, and repetitive typing.

Travel Required:

If travel is required, the candidate must have and maintain a current, valid Texas driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.

• 3.0 or higher GPA
• Enrolled in at least 6 hours of TJC class hours
• Subject Content Tutors: Earned A’s in classes you want to tutor
• Subject Content Tutors: Preference given to students qualified to tutor core curriculum courses and high-demand courses
• Writing Tutors: Earned A’s in both ENGL 1301 & 1302

REQUIREMENTS

Students must be registered for undergraduate classes and maintain enrollment status to work in these positions.

Additional Job-Specific Requirements

Students are allowed to work a maximum of eighteen (18) hours per week and cannot work in multiple hourly positions. A work week is Sunday-Saturday.
