Job summary

Denali Family Services is seeking a Peer Support Specialist Supervisor to oversee a team of peer support specialists, coordinate TIP programming, and maintain a field-based supervision model. You will ensure adherence to HIPAA privacy standards and collaborate across agencies to support youth and families in a range of settings.

The role requires leading 4–8 staff, scheduling, and providing ongoing coaching while maintaining program quality and outcomes in Wasilla and Anchorage.

The Peer Support Specialist Supervisor provides oversight of peer support services including supervision of the Peer Support Specialists (PSS’s), completes weekly scheduling of PSS staff, and assists in the implementation of the Transition to Independence Process (TIP) programming.

This position is responsible for observing policies, procedures, and safeguards to protect the privacy of health information in compliance with the HIPAA Privacy (Privacy Rule).

Essential Functions

• Supervise 4-8 Peer Support Specialists in Wasilla and Anchorage.
• Assign, allocate and supervise job duties of Peer Support Specialists.
• Provide peer support services to a small caseload of youth.
• Provide weekly supervision with each PSS, recognizing PSS strengths, providing feedback and guidance to strengthen skills, review challenges and successes with youth, conducting problem-solving, providing positive feedback and encouragement.
• Provide field-based supervision with each PSS on a quarterly or as needed basis, observing in the field the PSS working directly with youth. Write up observations and discuss these with the PSS to reinforce PSS competencies, problem solve areas of weakness, demonstrate and practice alternative ways of addressing situations, and recognize progress with youth.
• Maintain weekly Peer Support Specialist schedule and make necessary adjustments based on the needs of the youth served.
• Staff referrals for peer support services with the TIP Supervisor and maintain all referrals to assess fit and availability of services.
• Co-plan TIP events (i.e. overnights, outings, workshops, and programs) with the TIP Supervisor and co-lead events as necessary.
• Facilitate performance evaluations and progressive disciplinary plans as necessary with the Case Management Director’s approval.
• Promote interagency collaboration regarding peer support services and support for youth and young adults and their families (i.e., natural, extended, foster family, and/or young adults’ own family).
• Serve on related agency and community committees that are relevant to peer support services and fill in for the TIP Supervisor in community committees or events as assigned.

Measurement

• Maintains a minimum productivity target rate of 30 %.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

• Co-facilitate interviews to select personnel to serve as Peer Support Specialists who have the required prerequisite qualities and Skills.
• Provide pre-services and ongoing training of Peer Support Specialists on a) the TIP system and its guidelines and related elements; b) the Personnel Training Modules; c) professionalism as well as ongoing training and other expectations for PSS’s; and d) other related competencies.
• Ensure that the PSS’s meet and maintain position and agency requirements (e.g., valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, auto insurance for transport of youth, documentation standards, working hours that meet the needs of youth and families).

Minimum Qualifications

An Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in social work, human services, psychology, or a closely related field and two (2) years professional experience in family and children’s services that included working with people identified as developmentally disabled and/or as severely emotionally disturbed (SED). One (1) year of experience must have included lead or supervisory responsibility.

Additional requirements

• Competence to provide peer support services by virtue of a) having experienced or witnessed behavioral health issues in your life or in your family and b) a willingness to share this experience to support others.
• Understanding of the behavioral health service system based on your experience as a consumer or family member.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to perform sedentary work as well as to be engaged in physical exercise with youth such as running, walking, hiking, etc.
• Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
• Visual acuity necessary to utilize a computer monitor throughout the course of a normal workday.
• Ability to perform repetitive keyboarding activities and operate general office equipment.
• Ability to communicate verbally, both in person and over the telephone.
• Ability to wrap arms around and hold a person.
• Ability to twist and bend frequently.
• Must have visual and hearing acuity.

Working Conditions

Work is performed at the Denali Family Services office, in schools, in homes, in the community and youth homes.

Other Requirements

Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certification, continual proof of a valid Alaska Driver’s License, maintain current personal vehicle insurance and registration on personal vehicle(s) used for company business and maintain a violation free driving record for the past year. Must be at least 21 years of age due to insurance requirements. Ability to pass a State and FBI background check in accordance with the State of Alaska Background Checking Unit.
