Position Overview

This position serves as a personal guide and liaison for individuals with substance use disorders in WVU Health System affiliated treatment settings. The recovery coach supports patients by helping identify treatment needs, developing and monitoring individualized treatment plans, and supporting patients to stay in treatment. Responsibilities include outreach, support, recovery check-ups onsite and in the community, and working as part of a treatment team.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. High School Diploma or equivalent
  2. Completion of state or nationally recognized Peer Recovery Support Specialist Certification training with at least 40 hours covering Ethics, Advocacy, Mentoring/Education, and Recovery/Wellness Planning. Additional CEUs can be provided if necessary.
  3. WVCBAPP Peer Recovery Certification upon hire
  4. West Virginia state and/or Federal criminal background checks as required for DHHR WV CARES and/or regulated areas
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Valid Driver's License
  2. Completion of CCAR Recovery Coaching in the Emergency Department
  3. Active participation in recovery for two or more years and attendance at community recovery meetings
Core Duties and Responsibilities

These include, but are not limited to:

  1. Working actively with patients with Substance Use Disorders in WVU treatment settings and linking them to outpatient treatment
  2. Providing mentoring based on personal recovery experience
  3. Meeting face-to-face or via phone with individuals and support persons as requested
  4. Developing and monitoring individualized wellness plans
  5. Sharing information with the treatment team to inform decisions
  6. Linking patients to resources such as education, housing, recovery supports, and health services
  7. Serving as a liaison to support networks, including family and treatment providers
  8. Maintaining relationships with WVU treatment staff and other agencies
  9. Assisting in crisis situations involving social, emotional, health, or other issues
Physical Requirements
  1. Ability to sit or stand for long periods
  2. Ability to lift, push, or pull 10-15 pounds
Working Environment
  1. Ability to wear gloves, tolerate odors, and work in various shifts and locations, including hospital settings
  2. May be exposed to infections, traumatic situations, and physical injuries
Skills and Abilities
  1. Knowledge of treatment resources and 12-Step Fellowships
  2. Compliance with safety procedures and HIPAA training
  3. Effective communication skills with diverse audiences
  4. Ability to analyze information, solve problems, and prioritize tasks
  5. Developing cooperative relationships and teamwork skills
  6. Proficiency with Word and Excel
