Job summary

Volunteers of America Oregon seeks a dedicated Peer Support Mentor to provide recovery-oriented peer support within supportive housing settings in Portland, OR. You will help clients set and pursue personal recovery goals, navigate health and social services, and participate in structured activities and groups.

Experience with co-occurring disorders and Medicaid-related peer services is preferred; self-identified lived experience is valued.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Self-identified lived experience with addictions or mental health services required.
• Experience with co-occurring substance use and mental health concerns preferred.
• Experience with Medicaid-billable peer services or behavioral health settings preferred.
• Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may satisfy requirements.

Responsibilities

• Builds and maintains supportive peer relationships to promote client engagement and hope.
• Supports clients toward individualized recovery goals across treatment, housing, employment, education and wellness.
• Provides mentorship using trauma-informed, person-centered, and harm-reduction approaches.
• Facilitates peer-led recovery groups and activities to support community building.
• Connects clients to recovery supports including 12-step, mutual aid, and other resources.
• Assists clients navigating behavioral health, social services, and criminal justice systems.
• Conducts outreach and maintains regular client contact to enhance engagement.
• Assists with basic needs like obtaining IDs, benefits, housing, and appointments.
• Safely transports clients to appointments and activities.
• Observes relapse signs and follows protocols for safety and continuity of care.
• Responds to crises with de-escalation and peer-appropriate interventions.
• Documents in the electronic health record timely and accurately.
• Incorporates ROI forms to coordinate care with external partners.
• Collaborates with medical, counseling, and housing staff to align care plans.
• Uses client feedback and FIT to improve services.
• Maintains professional boundaries and ethical recovery-focused conduct.
• Participates in supervision, meetings, and professional development.
• Performs administrative duties and other tasks as assigned.
