Job Description

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting directly to the supervising social worker or designee, the SHOW addiction counselor carries out protocols identified for the mental health and substance use treatment of adult designated patients. These protocols will include provisions for clinical management of cases, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and appropriate record-keeping as well as other services determined by the SHOW supervising social worker.

General Tasks And Responsibilities Will Include

• Willingness to provide direct patient care on-site, including on nights and weekends, as agreed upon with the Clinical Supervisor or designee.
• Documents and files findings, interventions, and plans in the patient Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and submits timely billing.
• Establishes and maintains professional standards of performance concerning interview techniques, methods, and practices used in preparing clinical assessments, developing plans of care, and documenting case histories; engages in patient care as needed.
• May provide direct supervision and guidance to peer staff and review staff work.
• Guides SHOW behavioral health staff in exercising appropriate patient engagement and outreach techniques, methods, and practices; engages in patient care as needed.
• Participates in developing internal administrative controls of a program area to ensure compliance with federal and state laws, rules, and NYC Health + Hospitals regulations.
• Prepares reports and makes recommendations regarding policies or procedures to facilitate improved services, increased patient satisfaction, and better patient outcomes.
• Participates in the development and integration of community social services.
• Prepares summary reports comparing actual productivity to stated goals/objectives.
• Has extensive knowledge of mental health and substance use assessment, treatment, and psychoeducation and provides interventions for individuals experiencing a mental health and substance use issue. Has experience providing crisis mental health treatment to unhoused populations, particularly in a community setting
• Furnish information about community resources and develop appropriate aftercare plans such as coordinating appropriate referral(s) to treatment, linking to financial counseling and housing services as needed, including providing relevant information about professional services, community resources, and appropriate follow-up communication.
• Provides opioid overdose education, including Narcan kits and fentanyl test strips
• May orient and educate other professional disciplines by developing training curricula and presenting lectures covering workshops, seminars, etc., on counseling concepts.
• Participates as part of the SHOW multidisciplinary team in formulating overall care plans.
• Assumes other responsibilities and duties, including providing clinical coverage in different service settings assigned by the SHOW Supervisor or designee.
  
  

Minimum Qualifications

Assignment Level I

For Assignments In Comprehensive Emergency Psychiatric Programs (CPEPs)

• Certification, which must be maintained for the assignment’s duration, as a
• Peer Specialist (NYCPS) or Peer Specialist-Provisional (NYCPS-P) issued by the New York Peer Specialist Certification Board (NYPSCB); or
• Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA) or Recovery Peer Advocate-Provisional (CRPA-P) issued by the New York Certification Board (ASAP-NYCB); or
• Credentialed Family Peer Advocate (FPA-C), Credentialed Family Peer Advocate Provisional (FPA[1]P), Credentialed Youth Peer Advocate (YPA-C), or Credentialed Youth Peer Advocate Provisional (YPA-P) issued by Families Together in New York State; and
• Satisfactory and documented completion of a formalized Peer Advocate/Counselor/Specialist Training Program or one (1) year of full-time satisfactory experience working with consumers of CPEP services as a peer counselor/specialist, peer advocate, or in related human services.
  
  

For Substance Use Assignments

• Certification, which must be maintained for the assignment’s duration, as a Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA) or Recovery Peer Advocate-Provisional (CRPA-P) issued by the New York Certification Board (ASAP-NYCB); and
• Satisfactory and documented completion of a formalized Peer Advocate/Counselor/Specialist Training Program or one (1) year of full-time satisfactory experience working with consumers of substance use disorder services as a peer counselor/specialist, peer advocate, or in related human services.
  
  

For All Other Mental Health Assignments

• Certification, which must be maintained for the assignment’s duration, as a Peer Specialist (NYCPS) or Peer Specialist-Provisional (NYCPS-P) issued by the New York Peer Specialist Certification Board (NYPSCB); and
• Satisfactory and documented completion of a formalized Peer Advocate/Counselor/Specialist Training Program or one (1) year of full-time satisfactory experience working with consumers of mental health services as a peer counselor/specialist, peer advocate, or in related human services.
  
  

For All Other Assignments (Including Breastfeeding Education Assignments)

• Satisfactory and documented completion of a formalized Peer Advocate/Counselor/Specialist Training Program or one (1) year of full-time satisfactory experience working with consumers of peer services as a peer counselor/specialist, peer advocate, or in related human services; and
• A High school diploma or its educational equivalent.
  
  

Assignment Level II

In addition to meeting the qualification requirements of Peer Counselor Level I, assignment to Level II requires:

• One (1) additional year of experience, as described in Assignment Level I above.
  
  

Assignment Level III

In addition to meeting the qualification requirements of Peer Counselor Level I, assignment to Level III requires:

• Two (2) additional years of experience, as described in Assignment Level I above.
