Organization Overview

Institute for Community Living (ICL) is a non-profit organization serving the NYC-Metro area for over 35 years. We provide vital services including addiction assistance, mental health services, and housing support, aiming to make a positive impact with integrity, love, and respect.

Position Details

We are seeking a full-time Peer Counselor (PC) to join our team, specifically for Veterans at our VA Shelter location in Long Island City, NY. Peer Counselors are former residents who are employed and living in permanent housing, responsible for coordinating services, modeling behaviors for residents, and providing advocacy and counseling support.

Minimum Role Requirements & Preferences
  • Must be a Veteran
  • Location: Long Island City, NY 11101
  • Availability: Minimum 5 days/week, shifts TBD
  • Education: No formal degree required; completion of relevant internship or training in peer advocacy is mandatory
  • Experience: At least 1 year in advocacy or relevant human services, preferably with homeless or disabled populations
  • Certifications: CPR & First Aid (to be obtained within 90 days of employment)
  • Proper attire: Business casual or professional
Essential Skills & Abilities
  • Physical ability to stand, stoop, bend, and lift up to 20+ lbs
  • Proficiency in MS Word and Outlook
  • Reliable attendance and on-call availability
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals with mental health or behavioral issues
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Ability to document activities accurately and timely
  • Active listening skills and cultural sensitivity
  • Willingness to learn and adhere to regulations and policies
  • Knowledge of mental health and substance abuse issues
Key Responsibilities
  • Communicate effectively with residents, staff, and families
  • Assist residents with appointments, advocacy, and community resource access
  • Facilitate recovery groups and maintain case records
  • Support socialization and community integration activities
  • Assist staff in group activities and neighborhood management
  • Complete all required documentation accurately and timely
