Job description

The Physician provides primary, urgent or specialty medical care to patients at the NEMS clinic and performs related duties.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provides primary, urgent or specialty care to all patients in accordance with the physician’s medical specialty.
  2. Develops a plan of care for each patient, including: complete medical history, physical examination, diagnosis, appropriate treatment and/or referral, including hospitalization when necessary.
  3. Provides diagnosis and treats injuries, illnesses, and disorders.
  4. Orders, performs, and interprets diagnostic tests and explains the results to patients.
  5. May hospitalize NEMS patients when appropriate and serve as the attending physician during his/her stay in the hospital.
  6. On a rotational basis, serves as the on-call physician when the NEMS clinic is not open.
  7. Is able to work on Saturday clinic on a rotational basis.
  8. Stresses the importance of preventative health care measures and counsels patients.
  9. Prescribes medications or therapies.
  10. Uses all available resources in diagnosis and treatment, such as laboratory and radiological testing, in an appropriate and cost-efficient manner.
  11. Confers with consulting physicians, nurses, patients, and patients’ families concerning treatment and care of patients.
  12. Refers patients requiring specialist services, but maintains responsibility, assuring that continuity of care is provided.
  13. Participates in the development and implementation of regularly updated performance improvement plans for NEMS.
  14. Adheres to ethical, professional, and legal requirements as mandated by federal, state, local, and funding agencies.
  15. Documents electronically with the NEMS EHR system.
  16. Attends all medical staff meetings and participates in the community health center’s Quality Assurance program.
  17. Complies with all state and federal mandated regulations.
  18. Assists in the training of para-professional and non-medical personnel.
  19. Provides guidance to other health team members in the development of health education materials and programs for registrants and the community at large.
  20. Provides training or teaching, when appropriate, to medical students, medical residents, nursing students, and other students who come to NEMS for training.
  21. May provide supervision to mid-level providers such as NP or PA.
  22. Full-time physicians are generally required to maintain hospital privileges, which may include coverage of the emergency room and inpatient services for non-NEMS patients if this is a requirement by the hospital to maintain hospital privileges.
  23. Performs other job duties as required by manager/supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Graduation from an accredited school of medicine.
  2. Licensed to practice medicine in the State of California.
  3. Ability to work as a team with other health professionals and non-medical personnel.
  4. Board eligible or certified in Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Ob/Gyn, or Emergency Medicine.
  5. If providing subspecialty or specialty services, be board eligible or certified to that specific specialty or fellowship.
  6. Current documentation of Basic Life Support is required.

LANGUAGE:

  1. Must be able to fluently speak, read, and write English.
  2. Fluent in Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin) is preferred.
  3. Fluency in other languages is an asset.

STATUS:

This is an FLSA exempt position.
This is an OSHA high-risk position.
