Job summary

Presbyterian Healthcare Services in Albuquerque, NM invites applications for the Pediatric Student Sonographer Intern, a part-time, 0.50 FTE position designed to provide hands-on echocardiography experience under licensed supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Assist cardiac and vascular sonographers with patient preparation, positioning, and education.
  • Observe and participate in echocardiographic and vascular ultrasound procedures under supervision.
  • Support acquisition of high-quality diagnostic images and assist with measurements and documentation.
  • Learn operation, care, and maintenance of ultrasound equipment and keep exam rooms clean and ready.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team to support patient care and accurate diagnostic outcomes.
  • Adhere to patient privacy, safety, and infection prevention protocols.
  • Participate in clinical education opportunities, case reviews, and feedback sessions to strengthen skills.

Summary

The Pediatric Student Sonographer Intern will gain valuable hands-on clinical experience performing echocardiographic procedures under the direct supervision of licensed and registered cardiac sonographers. This role offers an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world healthcare environment while developing technical proficiency, critical thinking skills, and professional competence in cardiovascular ultrasound. The internship provides exposure to patient care, imaging protocols, and industry best practices, helping prepare students for a successful career in diagnostic medical sonography.

Responsibilities
  • Assist cardiac (adult or pediatric) and vascular sonographers with patient preparation, positioning, and education to ensure a positive and comfortable patient experience.

  • Observe and participate in echocardiographic and vascular ultrasound procedures under the direct supervision of registered sonographers.

  • Support the acquisition of high-quality diagnostic images and assist with measurements and preliminary documentation as directed by supervising staff.

  • Learn the operation, care, and maintenance of ultrasound equipment, ensuring exam rooms and equipment are clean, organized, and ready for patient use.

  • Collaborate with sonographers, physicians, and other healthcare team members to support exceptional patient care and accurate diagnostic outcomes.

  • Adhere to all patient privacy requirements, safety standards, infection prevention protocols, and organizational policies.

  • Participate in clinical education opportunities, case reviews, competency development activities, and feedback sessions to strengthen technical and professional skills.

  • Demonstrate professionalism, compassion, and a commitment to delivering outstanding patient-centered care.

  • Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient work environment while supporting daily department operations.

  • Perform additional duties and learning activities as assigned to support the imaging department and internship objectives.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Cardiovascular Sonography, Echocardiography, or Diagnostic Medical Sonography program.

  • Strong interest in cardiovascular imaging and a commitment to learning in a clinical healthcare environment.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and patient service skills.

  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to all organizational policies and professional standards.
