Description

The School Nurse (RN) will be working within a Multi-disciplinary Team to oversee care to students who have a brain injury or brain-based disorder and are medically fragile. The students are non-verbal, non-ambulatory and some have a trach, vent and/or g-tube. Most of the students have seizure disorder. Successful attributes include a desire to change the world for millions of children who suffer from brain injuries or brain-based disorders and a strong strategic focus, individual leadership in an environment that promotes innovation and continuous improvement, effective communication with key constituents and stakeholders, and accountability for results.

Responsibilities
  • Provide care to a medically fragile students with acute/chronic conditions
  • Primary point of contact between parents and students’ physicians
  • Conducting screenings and writing referrals for health services
  • Developing and monitoring health plans for students
  • Participate in development of each students’ ISHP
  • Obtain/complete all relevant medical documents including but not limited to MAFs, IHPs, care plans
  • Provide basic healthcare to students in case of injury or acute illness
  • Educate students and staff on healthy habits, such as proper nutrition and hygiene
  • Detect health problems in early stages through regular screenings
  • Keep track of students’ vaccination records
  • Update and maintain students’ medical history on iBrain’s electronic database
  • Ensure school environment is safe for children and school staff (e.g. prevention of communicable diseases)
  • Write referrals for pediatricians and other health specialists
  • Ensure compliance with national and local health laws
  • Help to create Training programs for staff on relevant healthcare topics and participate in seminars and other educational programs in house
  • Arrange for emergency care treatment for staff, interns, visitors, 1:1 nursing contractor, by virtue of calling 911, and dealing with emergency responders and ambulances, fire, police and other healthcare workers for example
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Related Services in connection with students, clinic and research, all within the scope of work. Stay current and be up to date on Covid or other healthcare required issues and prepared to provide a
  • Ensure school environment is safe for children and school staff (e.g. prevention of communicable diseases)
  • Review school documentation pertaining to body checks and other incidents, inform parents of such incidents and complete and submit related documentation promptly.
  • Assist in the development of IEP instructional and nursing goals/objectives; develops individualized school health plan (ISHP) as needed
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with parents, staff, and other school district personnel; serves as a resource/liaison with other agencies and other community services; maintains effective and timely written and oral communication with parents,
  • Provide parent education related to students' needs
  • Provide in-service training/consultation to staff and school district personnel; consults with staff regarding health and developmental needs of students
  • Evaluate and trains staff to be able to safely and accurately provide for individual student’s health needs
  • Participate in applicable staff development activities.
Qualifications
  • Current NYS Registered Nurse license
  • Three years of pediatric experience in hospital or school-based setting
  • Excellent communication skills working with staff and parents
  • Research experience a plus
  • Spanish speaking a plus
  • Must have excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Must have the ability to take initiative, and a highly flexible personality type
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds independently.
