Pediatric Medical Assistant

This person must be able to multi-task and function in a fast-paced environment while contributing to a positive environment for patients and staff. This person will participate in problem solving activities, must be detail oriented, sensitive to the patient’s needs, and require minimal supervision in order to function efficiently. The person in this position is directly involved in the patient’s care, under the direction of the provider and assists in the clinical treatment of the patient. He or she works directly with the provider and acts as a liaison between the patient and the provider. This person is responsible for following their designated provider and documenting patient charts as directed. This person must be able to control patient flow in the exam area by prioritizing tasks to minimize patient wait time. Communication with and respect for the patient is essential to build rapport. Good patient assessment skills are essential. This person must prioritize tasks and use space and time efficiently. The person in this position must be able to think critically and logically. This is a position of trust.

Communication

This position requires close communication with the patient, other nurses, providers, and case managers in order to coordinate care. Good oral and written communication skills are required for this position. Information must be exchanged using tact and persuasion appropriately. The ability to communicate in Spanish, Creole, or both is a plus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain professional behavior, and attitude towards patients, visitors, and coworkers.
  • Ensure exam rooms are kept neat and clean for each patient.
  • Review and prepare patient charts for upcoming appointments.
  • Ensure an annual health maintenance appointment has been completed.
  • Ensure all pending labs have been completed and entered in the patient chart.
  • Ensure all referral appointments have been completed and the reports have been indexed to the patient’s chart.
  • Ensure patient is compliant with all recommended health guidelines.
  • Update flowsheets as necessary.
  • Perform vital sign measurements on all patients presenting for care.
  • Perform reason for visit and review of systems for patient complaints.
  • Review medications and lab results with patient at each visit to ensure compliance of treatment.
  • Perform diagnostics such as EKG or Blood Glucose as directed by the provider.
  • Perform routine vaccinations as directed by the provider.
  • Document and track vaccinations on the appropriate log.
  • Prepare and administer medications or injections as directed by the provider.
  • Set up and assist providers with GYN exams on males and females.
  • Prepare and assist in small outpatient procedures.
  • Process prescriptions and refill requests as directed by the provider.
  • Document in patient charts as directed by the provider.
  • Provide appropriate patient education when necessary.
  • Document patient contacts and progress in the EHR.
  • Assist front desk with answering phones when needed.
  • Attends educational offerings as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • May occasionally need to travel from one clinic to another for coverage.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Current documentation of completion of Nursing Assistant course, Certified Nursing Assistant license issued by the state of Florida, or current certification as a Medical Assistant.
  • College degree preferred but not required
  • Annual updates for continuing education to maintain licensure or certification as required by the State of Florida.
  • Must be cross-trained in electronic medical records and Microsoft Outlook.

Experience

  • One year general medical experience required.
  • The ability to work within a pediatric setting is a must.
  • Knowledge of FL Shots/the VFC program.
  • The ability to track growth of a child.

Requirements

  • Level 2 background clearance required
  • Proof of immunizations for (1) Tdap, (2) MMR’s, HEP B vaccination, and either a history of chicken pox (varicella), or documentation of the varicella vaccine, a PPD Test is done once upon hire
