Job summary

Shriners Children’s seeks an Intensivist to lead pediatric critical care in a busy PICU. You will deliver advanced medical management for critically ill infants, children and adolescents, coordinating with surgical teams, nursing staff, and subspecialists.

Ideal candidates hold MD/DO, completed pediatrics with fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, and board eligibility. You will participate in teaching, research, and quality improvement while upholding compassionate family-centered

Qualifications

• MD or DO from an accredited medical school.
• Completed ACGME-accredited residency in Pediatrics.
• Fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine completed.
• Board certification or eligibility in Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.
• Eligibility for active medical licensure in the practicing state.
• BLS and PALS certifications.
• Credentialing and privileging by the medical staff.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and manage acute and chronic critical illnesses in pediatric patients.
• Provide advanced life support, including ventilation and ECMO.
• Perform procedures such as intubation, central line placement, arterial catheterization, LP.
• Coordinate with subspecialists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals for comprehensive care.
• Collaborate with surgical teams to stabilize critically ill patients.
• Discuss diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis with families compassionately.
• Educate and mentor students, residents, and fellows in pediatric critical care.
• Participate in research, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice.
• Maintain accurate medical documentation and adhere to hospital policies.

Job Description

The Intensivist specializes in the care of critically ill infants, children, and adolescents. They provide advanced medical management in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for patients with life-threatening conditions, including respiratory failure, sepsis, traumatic injuries, congenital disorders, and post-surgical complications.

Key Responsibilities

• Diagnose and manage acute and chronic critical illnesses in pediatric patients.
• Provide advanced life support, including mechanical ventilation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and vasoactive medications.
• Perform critical procedures such as intubation, central line placement, arterial catheterization, and lumbar punctures.
• Coordinate with pediatric subspecialists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
• Work closely with surgical teams to stabilize critically ill patients.
• Discuss diagnosis, treatment plans, and prognosis with patients' families in a compassionate and clear manner.
• Provide emotional support and guidance for families dealing with critical illness.
• Educate and mentor medical students, residents, and fellows in pediatric critical care medicine.
• Participate in clinical research, quality improvement projects, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
• Maintain accurate and timely medical documentation.
• Ensure adherence to hospital policies, patient safety protocols, and ethical standards of care.
• Maintain accountability for meeting established productivity benchmarks (e.g. wRVUS), quality metrics, and institutional performance standards
• Ensure time is allocated in accordance with assigned clinical, surgical, administrative, and academic expectations.

Required Qualifications

• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school
• Successful completion of an ACGME accredited residency in Pediatrics
• Successful completion of a fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine
• Minimum 1-3 years of post-fellowship or equivalent clinical experience in pediatric critical care medicine preferred; recent fellowship graduates will be considered based on training and clinical exposure
• Board certification or eligibility in Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine
• Must possess eligibility for active and unrestricted medical licensure in the state of practice
• Must possess eligibility for active DEA
• Must possess Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS for HCP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
• Credentialing and privileging by the medical staff in accordance with hospital bylaws
• Extensive knowledge of pediatric pathophysiology, pharmacology, and intensive care procedures
• Strong leadership, decision‑making, and problem‑solving skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with medical teams and families

Compensation is determined based on years of relevant experience and departmental equity.
