Qualifications

• MD or DO from an accredited medical school.

• Completion of a ACGME‑accredited pediatric anesthesiology fellowship, or board certification with at least five years of pediatric anesthesiology experience.
• Eligible to obtain and maintain an unrestricted Texas medical license.

Responsibilities

Summary

The Department of Anesthesiology at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a full-time Pediatric Anesthesiologist to join the pediatric anesthesia team at Christus Children\'s in San Antonio, Texas. The successful candidate will provide high-quality, evidence-based anesthesia and perioperative care for infants, children, and adolescents undergoing a broad range of surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures. The position includes a Baylor College of Medicine faculty appointment, with academic rank determined by the candidate\'s qualifications and experience.

Job Duties

Clinical Care

• Provide comprehensive anesthesia and perioperative care for pediatric patients undergoing surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures.
• Conduct pre-anesthetic evaluations and develop individualized anesthetic plans based on patient age, condition, history, and procedure.
• Administer appropriate forms of anesthesia, including general, regional, neuraxial, and intravenous techniques.
• Provide anesthesia across pediatric surgical and procedural specialties, including care for medically complex patients.
• Coordinate perioperative planning with surgeons, proceduralists, subspecialists, nursing teams, and other care team members.
• Manage pediatric airways, monitoring, vascular access, emergencies, trauma, codes, perioperative pain, and postoperative nausea and vomiting.
• Oversee the perioperative course, including induction, maintenance, emergence, transport, handoff, and post-anesthesia management.
• Complete accurate, timely clinical documentation and maintain compliance with applicable institutional, departmental, billing, regulatory, and patient-safety requirements.
• Participate in assigned call coverage, including evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays.

Quality and Professional Responsibilities

• Participate in quality-improvement, patient-safety, peer-review, and clinical standardization initiatives.
• Support evidence-based practices that improve outcomes, patient experience, efficiency, and continuity of care.
• Attend departmental meetings, case conferences, morbidity and mortality conferences, and other professional activities.
• Collaborate effectively with physicians, APPs, nurse anesthetists, anesthesiologist assistants, nurses, technicians, trainees, and administrative staff.
• Communicate professionally with patients, families, colleagues, and interdisciplinary teams.
• Support program development and other departmental initiatives aligned with pediatric anesthesia service needs.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Education and Academic Activities

• Teach and supervise residents, fellows, medical students, and other learners as assigned.
• Contribute to conferences, lectures, simulation activities, and continuing medical education programs. Maintain scholarly interest and ongoing professional development.
• Participate in research, educational scholarship, quality-improvement scholarship, or other academic activities as interests and opportunities allow.

Minimum Qualifications

• MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
• Completion of an accredited anesthesiology residency.
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited pediatric anesthesiology fellowship, or board certification in anesthesiology with at least five years of full-time pediatric anesthesiology experience.
• Eligible to obtain and maintain an unrestricted Texas medical license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in a tertiary pediatric hospital, academic medical center, or other high-acuity pediatric setting.
• Experience caring for neonates, medically complex children, and patients requiring multidisciplinary perioperative planning.
• Demonstrated commitment to clinical excellence, patient safety, teamwork, communication, and family-centered care.
