Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Patient Care Assistant for the Post Anesthesia Care Unit. You will support direct and indirect patient care, prepare rooms, and assist with perioperative tasks in a fast-paced unit.

Requirements include high school diploma, PCA/EMT certification, basic nursing knowledge, and current BLS. The role offers a mix of shifts with potential signing bonus eligibility and comprehensive teamwork for patient safety.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Direct and indirect patient care within departmental policies and objectives.
  • Assist in room setup and turnover to maintain patient flow and safety.
  • Transport patients, equipment, supplies, and specimens as directed.
  • Maintain safe peripheral corridors per fire and safety codes.
  • Tag broken equipment and arrange repairs as needed.
  • Assist in preparing operating rooms and perioperative areas.
  • Follow sterile techniques and assist with sterile procedures.
  • Support surgeon and RN during preoperative skin prep and patient positioning.
  • Select equipment and supplies for procedures as assigned.
  • Perform basic maintenance tasks such as changing gas cylinders.
  • Assist with admission, discharge, nutrition, and ambulation as directed.
  • Assist with vitals, assessments, and patient monitoring.

Hiring Range:

$15.06 - $27.10

(based on a full time schedule of 40 hours per week).

Please note that the final offer will vary based on scheduled hours. Compensation for part-time or reduced schedules will be prorated based on scheduled weekly hours, experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity considerations.

I. Major Responsibilities
  • Responsible for a variety of direct and indirect patient care activities within the established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.
  • Assists in room preparation and turnover of patient unit to maintain patient flow and room readiness, following safety standards.
  • Transports patients, equipment, supplies, specimens, or blood to a variety of areas following safety standards.
  • Maintains peripheral corridors in accordance with guidelines of fire and safety codes.
  • Tags broken equipment and transports to repair areas as necessary
  • Assists in the preparation of Operating Rooms and other perioperative areas.
  • Understands sterile techniques and is able to open sterile packages as directed by an RN.
  • Assists with operative surgical skin preps and/or assists with maintenance of the patients position while the surgical area is being prepped.
  • Picks equipment and supplies for patient procedures as assigned.
  • Performs basic maintenance tasks such as changing compressed gas cylinders.
  • Assists with admission and discharge of patients and assists with patient nutrition and patient ambulation as directed.
  • Assists patients with undressing/dressing and care of their belongings.
  • Assists Registered Nurse with vital signs and general assessment through observation of patients general conditions.
  • Performs patient testing such as EKG’s, blood glucose monitoring and pregnancy tests.
  • Performs pre-operative skin preparation, such as hair clipping and skin washing.
  • Provides skilled patient care as trained and assigned.
  • Assists with patient nutrition and patient ambulation as directed.
  • Assists with admission and discharge of patients.
  • Assists Registered Nurse with vital signs and general assessment through observation of patients’ general conditions.
  • Assists with patient nutrition, ambulation, and activities of daily living
  • Provides skilled patient care as trained and assigned

II. Position Qualifications
License/Certification/Education
  • Equivalent to high school education.
  • PCA or EMT certification.
  • Knowledge of basic Nursing Procedures.
  • Current BLS.
Experience/Skills
  • One year of nursing procedure experience.
  • Knowledge of equipment and supplies related to perioperative care of patients.
  • Ability to take direction, set priorities, and organize work assignments.
  • Ability to read, write, understand, and speak English.
  • Must be able to remain calm when under stress or in emergency situations.
Preferred
  • Prior OR experience.
