Job summary

Wight & Company, a nationally recognized architecture, engineering, and construction firm, seeks a Payroll Clerk / General Ledger Accountant to support payroll processing, GL maintenance, and financial reporting. The role emphasizes accuracy, confidentiality, and collaboration within a growth‑oriented finance team.

The ideal candidate brings 3+ years of payroll and accounting experience, strong Excel skills, and knowledge of payroll laws.

Qualifications

• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.
• 3+ years of payroll and accounting experience.
• Working knowledge of payroll laws and accounting principles.
• Experience with accounting software and payroll systems.
• Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
• Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
• Experience with construction, professional services, or project-based accounting environments a plus.

Responsibilities

• Process bi-weekly payroll accurately and on time.
• Review timesheets, payroll deductions, benefits, garnishments, and tax withholdings.
• Respond to employee payroll inquiries and resolve discrepancies.
• Prepare and post journal entries.
• Reconcile bank accounts, payroll accounts, and balance sheet accounts.
• Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes.
• Maintain and analyze general ledger activity.
• Assist with audits and provide supporting documentation.
• Support accounts payable and accounts receivable activities as needed.
• Maintain accurate accounting records and documentation.
• Assist with special projects and continuous process improvements.
