Job summary

Berkel & Company Contractors Inc is seeking a Payroll Associate to join our office. This entry level role handles detailed processing of field payroll information for union and non-union employees on construction sites nationwide, typically Monday–Friday 8 to 5 with overtime as needed.

You will add new hires with E-Verify, manage deductions and reporting, assist with Davis-Bacon and state reporting, and support field employees with questions.

  • Maintaining field checkbooks and answering questions from field employees.
  • Ability to handle an ongoing amount of filing. Other job duties assigned as needed.
  • Attendance is critical. Being prompt is important to provide continuous and on-going service to customers and employees. Attendance is important to maintain continuity of service. Work outside of normal duty hours may be required with as little as one hour advance notice.

Job Description: Payroll Associate

Position Summary:

Entry level with excellent growth potential. Position involves the detailed analysis and processing of field payroll information, transmitted in both electronic and hard-copy format, for union and non-union employees on various construction job sites around the country.

Due to a weekly payroll schedule, the position has a certain amount of pressure associated with it to meet the hard Wednesday afternoon deadlines. The basic work schedule is Monday-Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, although it is common to work a certain amount of overtime beyond the basic schedule to ensure that payroll is processed and sent out on time.

Responsibilities:
  • Adding new hires, using the federal E-Verify system, I-9 compliance.
  • Entering child supports, garnishments, banking, and other information.

Job Requirements:
  • Proficiency in basic mathematical calculations
  • Excellent attention to detail is critical
  • Good reading and comprehension skills
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and be able to interface with individuals at all levels of the organization
  • Proficiency on 10-key calculator
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, MS Outlook, general proficiency with e-mailing/scanning/faxing information, as well as the ability/tolerance for learning other computer application programs quickly
  • Ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, copier, and other general office equipment and proficiency evaluating third and fourth generation data and/or large amount of data
  • Ability to employ logic and common sense when analyzing information
  • Ability to both work and communicate well with numerous corporate and regional office contacts
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Calm demeanor and professional approach
Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Our Payroll Associate position is office-based, requiring sitting for extended periods of time at a desk at our corporate facility (90%), sitting at a computer terminal for long periods of time (90%), and moderate walking 10%. Inside office environment requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers and all levels of management.
