Job summary

The Hertz Corporation is seeking a Payments Engineer in the United States to design, build, test, and operate cloud-native payment systems across card-present and card-not-present methods. You will work with gateways like Adyen, CyberSource, Stripe, and Worldpay, implementing tokenization, secure handling of data, and robust API/event flows.

You will contribute to security reviews, threat modeling, and PCI compliance while driving improvements in latency, reliability, and transaction success.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field.
• 4+ years of software engineering with 2+ years building/operating payment systems.
• Hands-on with major payment gateways (Adyen, CyberSource, Stripe, Braintree, Worldpay, FIS).
• Proficiency in a modern backend language and REST/event-driven APIs.
• Knowledge of PCI DSS, tokenization, encryption, and secure payment data handling.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP) and CI/CD pipelines.
• Strong debugging and root-cause analysis across distributed systems.
• Experience with relational/distributed data stores and SQL.
• Experience with ISO 8583/ISO 20022 is a plus.
• Regulated/compliance-heavy environments (PCI, SOX) are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, test, and deploy scalable cloud-native payment apps and services.
• Integrate with payment gateways and processors (Adyen, CyberSource, Stripe, Braintree, Worldpay, FIS).
• Implement tokenization and secure handling of cardholder data within PCI scope.
• Build APIs and event flows for authorization, capture, refund, void, and settlement.
• Tune fraud signals and chargeback workflows with Risk and Fraud teams.
• Establish observability: logs, metrics, traces, alerts for payment paths.
• Participate in on-call rotation and post-incident reviews.
• Improve transaction success, latency, and reliability of owned systems.
• Write secure code per PCI DSS and Hertz standards; conduct threat modeling.
• Develop event-driven services using AWS and serverless tech.
• Configure and manage Kubernetes clusters and service mesh at scale.
• Collaborate to translate business requirements into tech solutions.
• Create, maintain docs, runbooks, and architecture records for payment systems.
• Improve developer experience and CI/CD pipelines.

Job description

A Day in the Life:

The Payments Engineer is a hands-on engineering building and operating Hertz's payment systems and integrations. This role designs, builds, tests, deploys, and maintains Cloud enabled payment engine and services across card-present, card-not-present, and alternative payment methods, including tokenization, fraud signals, settlement, and reconciliation flows.

The Payments Engineer reports to the Sr Manager Payments Engineering, partners closely with the Solutions Architect on design and pattern adoption, participates in on-call rotation, and contributes to the engineering culture and standards of the team.

What You'll Do:

• Design, build, test, and deploy scalable and secure cloud-native payment applications, services and integrations across card-present, card-not-present, and alternative payment methods.

• Implement integrations with payment gateways and processors such as Adyen, CyberSource, Stripe, Braintree, Worldpay, or FIS.

• Implement tokenization, vault interactions, and secure handling of cardholder data within PCI scope.

• Build and maintain APIs and event flows for authorization, capture, refund, void, chargeback, and settlement.

• Implement and tune fraud signals, scoring rules, and chargeback dispute workflows in coordination with the Risk and Fraud teams.

• Build observability into all payment paths, including structured logs, metrics, traces, and alerting.

• Participate in on-call rotation; respond to incidents and lead post-incident reviews for areas you own.

• Drive measurable improvements in transaction success rate, latency, and reliability for the systems you own.

• Write secure code aligned with PCI DSS and Hertz security standard; participate in threat modeling and security reviews.

• Develop resilient, event-driven services using AWS and other serverless technologies.

• Create, configure and manage Kubernetes clusters at scale. Implement best practices and configure and manage service mesh

• Collaborate with Product, QA, and Operations to translate business requirements into technical implementations.

• Author and maintain technical documentation, runbooks, and architectural decision records for payment systems you own.

• Continuously improve developer experience, build / test / deploy pipelines, and code quality.

• Stay current on payments industry trends, card scheme rules, and emerging payment methods.

• Ensure compliance with all Corporate Policies and Procedures, PCI DSS, and SOX requirements.

What We're Looking For:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.

• 4+ years of software engineering experience, with 2+ years' building or operating payment systems.

• Hands-on experience with at least one major payment gateway or processor such as Adyen, CyberSource, Stripe, Braintree, Worldpay, FIS, or ACI.

• Proficiency in a modern backend language such as Java, Kotlin, Python, or Go, and experience with REST and event-driven APIs.

• Working knowledge of PCI DSS, tokenization, encryption, and secure handling of payment data.

• Experience with relational and / or distributed data stores; comfortable writing and tuning SQL.

• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and CI / CD pipelines.

• Strong debugging and root-cause analysis skills, including across distributed systems.

• Effective written and oral communication.

• Experience with fraud platforms, 3D Secure, or chargeback / dispute systems is a plus.

• Experience with ISO 8583 or ISO 20022 messaging is a plus.

• Experience working in a regulated or compliance-heavy environment (PCI, SOX, or similar) is a plus.

• Industry experience in transportation, hospitality, retail, or marketplace businesses is a plus.

We expect the starting salary to be around $90,000, Actual salary will be determined based on relevant work experience
