Job summary

Colonial Group in Newton, NC seeks a seasoned Furniture Product Development Pattern Maker to bridge design and manufacturing. You will develop patterns, patterns for fabric and leather, and digitize for production. Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure samples become production-ready.

You will refine patterns for durability and cost-effectiveness and train teams on new styles heading to production. Experience in upholstery and CAD is essential.

Qualifications

  • Previous pattern-making experience in furniture manufacturing.
  • Proficiency in CAD and freehand measurement.
  • Strong knowledge of upholstery techniques and fabrics.
  • High accuracy in measuring and blueprints.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and modify physical mock-up frames for New Product Development.
  • Create accurate cutting patterns for upholstery fabrics and leathers.
  • Digitize patterns and generate optimized cut markers to reduce waste.
  • Document style numbers, part codes, and spec sheets with materials.
  • Evaluate test samples for quality and adjust patterns for production readiness.
  • Train sewing, cutting, and upholstery staff on new styles for production.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PATTERN MAKER

A Furniture Product Development Pattern Maker bridges the gap between design and manufacturing, transforming conceptual sketches and prototypes into precise, functional, and production-ready templates. They ensure new furniture designs are durable, cost-effective, and optimized for mass manufacturing. This position is based at our Upholstery headquarters in Newton, NC.

Responsibilities:
  • Prototype Development: Work closely with designers and product developers to build and modify physical mock-up sample frames for New Product Development.
  • Pattern Creation: Develop highly accurate cutting patterns (fabric, leather, or poly) for upholstered furniture, ensuring a perfect fit for various cushion sizes and shapes.
  • Digital & Software Operations: Digitize patterns and generate optimized cut markers (using software like Lectra or Morgan) to minimize material waste and improve fabric utilization.
  • Documentation: Create and manage style numbers, part codes, and detailed specification (spec) sheets detailing the exact materials needed (springs, webbing, poly).
  • Quality Assurance & Troubleshooting: Evaluate test samples for structural integrity and comfort, tweaking and adjusting patterns to make them production-friendly.
  • Manufacturing Handoff: Train sewing, cutting, and upholstery associates on how to build and assemble new styles going into production.
Qualifications/Skills:
  • Experience: Previous pattern-making experience, ideally in the furniture manufacturing industry.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in digital pattern-making software (CAD) and freehand measurement.
  • Product Knowledge: Strong understanding of wood construction, upholstery techniques, and how different fabrics or leathers stretch and behave.
  • Attention to Detail: High degree of accuracy in measuring, calculating dimensions, and reading blueprints.
  • Collaboration: Strong communication skills to partner with cross-functional teams like Quality Control, and Production
