Job summary

New Castle County Police Department is seeking qualified candidates for police officer positions. The role entails protecting life and property, investigating disturbances, making arrests, and enforcing state laws along with county regulations.

Officers may patrol, conduct investigations, and testify in court as needed. Applicants must meet age and educational criteria, complete academy training or hold equivalent certifications, and pass fitness and background checks.

Qualifications

• Twenty one (21) years of age upon successful completion of New Castle County police academy training and one of the following by the date of the written examination: possession of an Associate's Degree or at least sixty (60) credit hours from an accredited college or university.
• Or at least two (2) cumulative years of active military service with an honorable discharge and thirty (30) credit hours from an accredited college or university.
• Or at least four (4) cumulative years of active military service with an honorable discharge.
• Or a current Delaware Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission certified police officer with four (4) years full-time police experience.
• Or a current out-of-state police certification with two (2) years full-time police experience and thirty (30) credit hours from an accredited college or university.
• Or five (5) consecutive years of progressively responsible work experience that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to meet the required knowledge, skills and abilities of the position.

Responsibilities

• Enforces laws and County regulations; patrols assigned area; checks doors and windows and inspects premises.
• Subdues combatants, makes arrests, and accompanies prisoners to headquarters or court.
• Directs traffic, attends fires or accidents, and prepares investigation reports.
• Maintains order at public gatherings and assists motorists.
• Gathers information, performs investigations, and provides public information on laws and ordinances.
• Operates radio, radar, and computer equipment; serves subpoenas and executes warrants.
• Provides escort services for dignitaries and transports prisoners as required.
