Job description

JOB TITLE: PATROL OFFICER

Job Summary:

The Patrol Officer works under the supervision of the Patrol Sergeant and is responsible for enforcing traffic and criminal laws. This position is governed by state and federal laws, department policy, and civil service rules and regulations.

Examples of Work:
  1. Patrols businesses and residential areas using an equipped patrol car; assists motorists; enforces motor vehicle and criminal laws, including issuing citations and making arrests; books, guards, and escorts prisoners; deals with juvenile offenders; and assists other law enforcement agencies.
  2. Responds to and investigates calls for service; protects crime scenes; assists CID when requested; collects and protects evidence; interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects; reports from the public and businesses; investigates accidents; prepares reports; directs traffic; and engages with community members.
  3. Performs vehicle maintenance and maintains a professional appearance.
  4. Testifies in court and submits reports as required.
  5. Familiarizes with patrol areas, known offenders, and potential problem areas.
  6. Participates in training and serves as a community resource.
Work Relationships:

Frequent contact with department personnel, other law enforcement agencies, businesses, and the public; occasional contact with civic clubs and schools.

Special Job Dimensions:

Subject to call out, exposure to danger, carrying a firearm, shift work, and irregular hours.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of law enforcement principles and practices, criminal justice system, and self-defense.
  • Ability to handle weapons, testify in court, interpret laws, communicate effectively, conduct investigations, and enforce laws.
Physical Demands:

Requires sitting, talking, listening, standing, walking, handling objects, reaching, climbing, stooping, and lifting over 100 pounds. Vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Additional education or experience may be substituted with approval.
Special Requirements:
  • Certified as a Law Enforcement Officer by the Arkansas Law Enforcement Standards Commission.
