Job description

Responsibilities

Transports Patients to and from scheduled treatment appointments by the use of stretchers, wheelchairs, beds, ambulation.

1. Assess patient's ability to transfer to mode of transportation.
2. Refers patients perceived to be incapable of transferring without assistance to nurse.
3. Reviews handoff report for essential information to care for patient during transport.
4. Transportation of patients is carried out in a timely manner according to department guidelines.
5. Assists patients to and from wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds with technical staff and nursing assistance as needed.
6. Transport assignments are dispatched electronically.

Observes departmental and hospital safety policies and procedures, including but not limited to:

1. Maintains safety standards and uses proper body mechanics while assisting patients in transfer to and from beds, stretchers, wheelchairs, and ambulating.
2. Follows patient identification policy (4.22.137) during each transport.
3. Safety precautions, i.e. side rails are always in place during transportation.
4. Assists with patient care activities such as positioning, lifting, and turning patients, restraining combative patients, assisting patients out of bed during transport process.
5. Properly handles oxygen tanks, infusion pumps, IV's and other medical equipment.
6. Utilizes universal precautions at all times when transport or handling patients.
7. All patient information is held in confidence at all times.
8. Uses and maintains equipment according to vendor protocol and departmental standards.
9. Perform related duties based on departmental needs.

Unit Responsibility/Accountability

1. Serves as a positive role model - maintains a positive attitude.

3. Responds to scheduling responsibilities with timeliness.
4. Utilizes the time and attendance system appropriately.
5. Contributes to unit performance improvement activities.
6. Participates in Peer Evaluation process.
7. In-services and unit meetings are attended.
8. Maintains the integrity of unit equipment. Cleans all equipment after each use.
9. Completes all unit assignments as assigned.
10. Assists visitors to designated areas as needed.
11. Performs other duties as required or directed.

Patient Contact:

1. Associate transports newborn, infant, adult, adolescent and geriatric patients via wheelchair, beds, or stretcher to departments/units.
2. Evidence exists that the employee has obtained age specific education and training.

Maintains clutter-free environment within the hospital and surrounding areas.

1. Assigned specific areas to monitor by lead transporter.
2. Expected to clear unwanted equipment such as wheelchairs, O2 tanks, stretchers, and beds.

Attends required in-services, including but not limited to:

1. Demonstrates proficiency in CPR.
2. Completes yearly education/competency review per department guidelines.
